  • Like others, I'm thinking of comin' back.

I played FFXI probably five or six years ago, now. I never really got too high with any of my jobs, but I still enjoyed the game a good bit. I recently got interested in trying FFXI again due to my girlfriend's interest in the game (she's a lifelong Final Fantasy fan). That couple with seeing the Ultimate edition on Steam... well, there you go. If I DO come back, I'll be starting fresh... the Ultimate edition on Steam has my name on it (for only $14.00!).

So, my question is, what sort of community is out there nowadays? I'm finding more and more that MMOs, for me, are really about people. Sure, the levels, armors, weapons, etc are nice... but the people are what make all of those things have any meaning. The battle behind the sword, the crafting behind the armor...

I need to have a good community to take root in. As far as linkshells specifically? I just want people who are willing to answer a million questions. I'll not turn away useful aid (seed money, whatever else), but I don't expect handouts, either. At all. In fact, I am pondering a non-acceptance policy. What I really want is to be given the tools to get beyond where I was before (which is not far, believe me) and thrive in FFXI. Learning to make gil is way more important than being given the check book, for example.

So, that's my little introduction/question/whatever thing. It's 5am here, cut me some slack... this is pretty good, I think. :p

I am totally willing to answer any questions you guys have for me, to clarify, etc.

    Thanks in advance!

      Thanks Squiggs.

I belong to the MyLittleChocobo linkshell. We are the linkshell in Valefor that Squiggs mentioned.

We currently just made this linkshell. We have members from various countries, so there is usually at least 1 person on at all times. We are looking for new and returning players, so you would fit right in that category.

Have questions? If we can answer them, we will. If we can't, we'll direct you to where you may find answers. Need help with a quest or mission? Ask! While we don't have all the quests and missions done ourselves, some are impossible to solo. Asking for help isn't shameful, and it's a good way to get to know your ls members.

Let us know when you decide to get back online!

Re: Like others, I'm thinking of comin' back.

Every LS is gonna be different, but the one thing I can tell you is that the player base got shaken up when the 75 cap was removed. Mostly it was people who had been sitting on their uber 75 gear for multiple years, and went QQ when it suddenly wasn't uber anymore.

Also, if you remember the details of your previous account, you might be able to get it reactivated. If you have a buttload of gil from the old days it might be worth it, but FFXI has gone from hyper-inflation to hyper-deflation to gear decay through the level cap to most "uber" gear now being rare/ex and attainable in small groups or with the help of people who want something else from the NM.

That sounds good. I'm not sure when exactly I'll be able to get back up in-game. I have PLENTY of time (I'm a high school student, so my summers are comparatively empty), but my Internet is generally slow, so even if I started the download on Steam today, it'd probably be a day or two before it was done...

Thanks for the reply, though! I'll poke around the MyLittleChocobo post here in a bit.

I'm not too concerned with the way people are as long as there's a goodly amount of people who aren't ... well, you know, NOT fun to play with. I think the highest I got was around 20ish RDM (with 10 BLM or so as support), so I won't really suffer the problem with all my stuff being devalued, etc.

That being said, I had around 100k gil. I'm not sure where that falls in today's economy, but I'm not too worried about getting it back, either. I know I had written down the information to every online game I've ever played on a piece of paper somewhere, so if I went hunting, I could probably find the old login information and such... but again, I'm not really concerned. The Steam download comes with its own key and stuff anyways, so I may as well use that.

Thanks for the replies, everybody! I appreciate it.

EDIT: From the Steam Store: "Hard Drive: 12 GB of free space or more." Ick. Looks like I'll be uninstalling and/or hunting down stuff to remove.

Re: Like others, I'm thinking of comin' back.

Well, I went ahead and spent the $14 a few hours ago. Much to my surprise, the download is already 13% done. If I can pull this kind of rate in to the evening (which I should...), FFXI will be done and ready to go for tomorrow! Until then, I can run my little Caribbean island in Tropico 3 and stuff. Of course, I won't be online much due to the 4th of July, anyways...

Also, I'm not really sure what class I want to attempt this time around. I did RDM before and I liked the flexibility, but I don't think I want to do that all over again. What sort of suggestions does anyone have for me? I was thinking Monk or Thief, myself. I don't think I want to start out as a mage. :p (Is it appropriate to put this here in this thread or should I really start a new one?)

                Thanks in advance, all!

I am going to suggest that if you want to do MNK, to start out as WAR first. It makes the logical sub.

Never leveled THF, so I don't know what to tell you there.

Re: Like others, I'm thinking of comin' back.

THF is easy for starting out. THF/WAR is alright until you unlock more subs.

                    I used /DNC and /NIN for leveling post 30.

Hmm... alright. I guess it doesn't really matter which (WAR or MNK) I take, starting out, for my main. I'll still have to do some swapping later, either way. Thanks!

Sounds good. I like the idea of THF/DNC and THF/NIN, and both seem like they would mesh pretty well. Thanks!
