POL (If you have the Ultimate Collection that includes Wings of the Goddess, you don't need to download POL, use the one on the disk)
Base FFXI
Zilart
CoP
ToAU
WoTG

Update

when I said FFXI, I meant all of it, I would assume that people by now would just call the game as a whole FFXI *shrugs*, but your right, I should have been clear about it.

Thank you Aeni for the specification.
I am administrator, but this "professionality" of windows 7 is annoying, it asks me a confirm for everything lol.
I'll try the combination now.
if you find the UAC to be annoying (its that allow popup that you dont like) you can shut that off by going to

start > in the search box type MSCONFIG, then go to the "tools" tab and click the "change UAC settings"

slide the bar all the way down to the bottom and then click ok, then reboot, and you will be rid of it.

The problem was the update between installing POL and FFXI. That update can mess the whole thing up. Don't run POL to update anything until after the game has been installed.

Re: FF11 + windows 7 = i'm going crazy

Ok guys... first problem.
I installed the patched POL, updated it, and when it comes to install FFXI (base) I get this
"Can't install FINAL FANTASY XI because POL is not installed".
Does this... make any sense? If I install old POL, it doesn't run on windows 7, if i install patch POL the old FFXI doesn't see it.

You can't use the main installer (the one that lists POL and FFXI and Zilart together) you have to run each setup individually if you download the POL viewer from SE.

The instructions are right there on the page you downloaded POL from.

Mhurron what's the main installer? I don't understand what you mean , but I found the thing you were talking about on the Playonline page.
It says setup.exe from disc 1 for Final Fantasy 11
setup.exe from disc 4 for Zilart
setup.exe from disc 1 for Promathia

(even though I don't have a CD number 4 for Zilart, just one).

Re: FF11 + windows 7 = i'm going crazy

Stop updating POL before you install the rest of the game!

step 1> completely erase everything with FFXI
step 2> download (or re-install) the VISTA/Windows7 POL Client
step 3> install FFXI then Zilart, then CoP, then ToAU, then WoTG, then Mini expansions, then abyssea
step 4> log on to POL, update (POL will restart)
step 5> log back on to POL, launch ffxi, update
step 6> ???
step 7> profit$$$

Optional
step 8> download windower
step 9> get blinkmenot, yarnball, spellcast plugins
step 10> bookmark ffxiah.com, ffxicyclopedia. org ASK THESE WEBSITES QUESTIONS BEFORE YOUR LINKSHELL!!!
step 11> take up synergy
Re: FF11 + windows 7 = i'm going crazy

This is something I haven't tried ShepardG, I'll try this.

Update: ShepardG I got the same problem. I can't install FFXI because the patch POL is not counted as a regular POL.
I get the same message "could not install Final Fantasy XI because Playonline is not installed".
How can I get out of this circle?!

Re: FF11 + windows 7 = i'm going crazy

I run ff11 on WIndows 7 64bit ult, no problem whats so ever. However i did install via steam... But i have not had any problems with compatibility, i even use a ps3 controller as my game pad for ff. If you could elaborate on what your problem is, ive had many windows 7 errors with old games such as everequest 2 and everequest 1, final fantasy 8 pc version... but after alot of reading and hours of trying and testing.. i have gotten all of them to work.

What do you mean installed via steam? I know nothing about it...
