  • Returning/New? Player

    Hello all!

I've not long started my Galka MNK on this fine server & thought I'd do a quick intro!

I'm from the UK, on most nights around 20:00(GMT) Played FFXI on NA release for about 3 months but never really got going with it.

I come from a background of MMORPGs, played EQ/EQII/WoW mainly & man, is this different!

I've been doing a lot of reading up & I've managed to scrap my way up to lvl 11 so far. But now it's getting time to PT up I thought I best make myself know
I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions you'll have all seen before but rest assured I do use the search, I just don't know all the terms yet!

Anyway, If you're new and need a bit of company or fancy helping someone learn the ropes - please send a tell & we'll go smack some beasts

      Re: Returning/New? Player

      Thanks very much cid

It's a bit overwhelming, the new person at school kinda feeling. Hopefully there are still a few true newbies like me out there, I know the game is very mature now.

I wonder what will be expected of someone new to the game in parties? Do vets play nice with people starting from scratch or am I going to be expected to fire straight in with Skill Chains and have all my gear +1

I've done the tutorial NPC quests in San d'Oria and started on the missions too. Are there any other good quests/things I should be doing at my level that I don't know about?

This might be an easy one to answer, is there a "sprint" like command I'm missing out on? Just wondering for when I need to disengage from a crazed mob!

        Re: Returning/New? Player

There's still a trickle of brand new folks coming through. I only started last summer myself, so it's just a matter of finding them.

Most folks I've encountered don't rag on you for gear in exp parties so I wouldn't worry too much when you're starting out. Just don't show up naked or in level 1 gear and you should be ok. Skill Chains have gone out of style though, which is a shame because they're really quite cool and fairly potent at lower levels.

The only sprinting I can think of is the "Flee" job ability that Thief gets, although on the PC you can toggle between walking and running( "/" or 7 on the number pad I think). Chances are you won't outrun the mob unless its pathing goes funky and runs it into a tree or something. Mobs tend to cheat and hit you the whole time you're running away. You'll die to a lot of bunnies but it's all part of the learning process.

I'm not too familiar with Sandy quests, but I know there's a repeatable one for turning in bat wings. Other than that I'd suggest talking to the gate guards and getting started on nation missions.

Quests - FFXIclopedia, the Final Fantasy XI wiki - Characters, items, jobs, and more
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.
