  • Job Discussion

So I am returning to FFXI after taking two years off. Previously I had a 75 BLM and 75 THF. I enjoyed them very much. But this time around I want to roll something new. So I got a Mithra MNK currently. Just unlocked my subjob and I am only lvl 18 but I just started last week. I am trying to decide on my main job. I am considering staying MNK or DRK, WAR/NIN if thats even a viable class anymore. I definatly dont want to spellcast too much I have been a caster in WOW and previously in FFXI. I want a strong Melee Job. I would like a job that can solo for farming but will focus mostly on party play while leveling. Any suggestions? Which Melee is the best? Dont say SAM they just dont appeal to me. Any problems with the above selections? And which would be best for Mithra?

There is no best melee. Each melee differs depending on your playing style.

Do you like weaponskill a lot? Choose samurai.

Do you like good DoT? Choose monk

Also, dark knight is good for souleater >> Weaponskill combo, though your healer will more than likely hate you if you keep it on.

Warrior is also pretty nuts with a great axe.

Ranger is good damage as well, if you like shooting from guns and bows.

So really, it all depends on your playing style. If you like weaponskill damage more, I would go with dark knight, warrior, or rng. If you like weaponskilling a lot, samurai. If you like high DoT, choose monk (or war, depending on how you play it).

So your saying DOT meaning hit for hit MNK and WAR get there damage? Now that you mention it I do like WS DMG. I like to see those big numbers. What subjobs would you suggest for War, DRK and MNK?

Yes, damage over time. While monk does not have the most powerful weaponskills, it makes up for it with haste gear and normal TP hits.

As far as subjobs goes, it all depends on what you're doing really. But as far as the most common powerful subjobs,

war/thf: Good for sneak attack. If you're using a great axe, you'll benefit from this a lot
war/sam: Good for hasso and the occasional third eye

mnk/thf: As far as a practical standpoint goes, I'm not sure. However, I've seen some sick numbers from SA >> Howling Fist.
mnk/war: Pretty standard for monks whenever you're not going to be tanking. Good for double attack and berserk.

        drk/sam: Same reason as before.
drk/thf: Seen a lot of dark knights sub thief in exp parties, for trick attack and sneak attack. Not sure how practical it is now.
        drk/war: Same reason as before.

Thanks for your help. I have decided to roll another THF. They just appeal to me the most. They have some sick abilities and TH is never bad to have. I will be THF/MNK H2H until 30 when I unlock Ninja. Im wondering though if I can make it as a NIN/THF to 37. I dont want to be rolling a bunch of subjobs. I want just what I need for now until I get something to 75.

There's no way around "rolling a bunch of sub jobs." You need at the very least /NIN and /WAR. And no, you can't do NIN/THF to 37 unless you do it solo, and /THF isn't a particularly good solo sub either.

In addition to that I wouldn't recommend H2H as your primary weapon even if you do go THF/MNK, because it doesn't provide you better DPS than a good sword, and while your WS will be a bit stronger, it's a lot easier to set up a Distortion skillchain than a Fusion skillchain - and most parties will invite you expecting a Distortion skillchain.

Fine. Most people that still skillchain will expect a THF to be able to do Distortion.
