  • Can you guess what this thread is about?

Ok, so as you all guessed i am returning to FFXI, though this time bringing friends along. I had 2 previous stints in the game, but only have access to my more recent POL ID. This account had only Original FFXI activated (through use of a buddy pass about a year ago), and i have a 20 RDM along with 2 or 3 jobs in the low teens, and the sub quest completed. I've read up on the new Level Sync system, which sounds great and helps my main gripes with why i quit the last 2 times (groups were mostly unfindable) and FoV (soloing wasn't very efficient). So my questions that develop from this are:

    1. What would you value the time spent on what i have achieved in my inactive content ID? Is 20 on a main and the subjob quest fast enough(done in maybe a full days played time, less or more?) that i am better off just starting fresh and getting the 44 free days?

    2. What would be the best way to get my friends more familiar with the game itself before details like the frustrating interface scares them off? Any good noob/startup guides you can point us to?

    3. Is the game still as much of a timesink as it was in previous years? I mean i know the game is what you make of it but i've heard some awesome stuff from friends about the endgame so i was wondering just how much of a commitment we would need to make to get there.

    4. Is there servers with a (notibly) higher proportion of NA/EU players? Not that i have problems playing with JPs, just find it much easier when i don't have to use the auto-speak and the game is just more enjoyable when its more sociable. Maybe a server any of you guys are on? Which leads into...

    5. FREE GIL/ITEM PLZ?! Kidding, but any other help you can think of (or give ) would be much appreciated.

Re: Can you guess what this thread is about?

    1) How much gil did your character have? Deflation has bottomed out, and any significant amount of pre-deflation gil is good to have. But at level 20 with no crafting skills, I doubt you have that.

I say go for it, you've got a lot of time in that character, and there's always other jobs you can start fresh with if you want the newbie experience again. Also, Level Sync means you can fight along with your friends in lowbie zones even with that 20 RDM. And do the chocobo license quest first thing if you haven't already.

    2) If you haven't already found ffxiclopedia.org, ffxi-atlas.com, and ffxiah.com, go there and check them out. There are also some useful guides on ffxi.allakhazam.com, even though that site tends to be shunned because its forums are full of tardness and fail. All of these sites will help you get up to speed faster. There are too many quests, and too much walking around for them, to not use the web sites to know where to go next, or even to know you can't finish something yet.

    3) You're thinking about passing up reviving a level 20 character and worrying about time sinks?

It's as much of a time sink as you make of it. The real time sink isn't just getting to endgame, it's endgame itself. I refuse to ever do weekly Die-namis, etc. runs; it seems to be a treadmill where you get rare gear so you can go back and get more rare gear, and I'm not a gear hound. It might be nice to go a couple of times just to see the place (and the infamous "aggro house" of Windurst), but I think that's unlikely because nobody wants to drop half a million gil for a group to go there unless they're going there to raid for loot.

I suppose if you went to XP parties multiple times a week, you could hit 50 in a month or so. Then with a linkshell to help you with the limit break quests, you could maybe hit 75 in another month or two. It's taken me a lot longer because I hate being main heal in an XP party (I've found more fun ways to play WHM), and I've been spending time questing and farming and crafting too.

In any case, you'll get there a lot faster if you keep to a single job/subjob most of the time. Some people will play for a year or two and never break 40 because they get distracted by trying other jobs.

    4) Save your Beastmen seals. It's no longer the inventory sink it used to be, as you can trade them to Shami in Port Jeuno and he'll remember how many you gave him. By the first time you get to Jeuno you probably won't have 100 yet.

And how about "do your damn quests". It's no fun to hear someone whine about not having enough fame to quest for a spell or other item when they're level 40. I had my first three teleport scrolls soloed and ready to pick up when I was 35 or so.

Re: Can you guess what this thread is about?

When I came back after 3 years my char and mules were still there (woot!) . My main was a 75 beast and 75 smn with whm 72 and other little odd jon=bs. With 100+3 cooking on my main and a decent amount of gil. With all that it helped me to get reacquiainted with the game aside from asking ppl a bazilion questions, like..

How do i invite someone to my party? How do i accept a party invite? Etc basic little newbie stuff i had forgotten. Naturally all my map markers and hot keys were gone, and starting from scratch took a while to remember and remake.

Now I just have to wait for registration server to be up and running as i cancled the wrong char ID and have the mule active wich is lv 1 and no subjob rofl. Sigh, tried to reactivate but oddly u cant do that UNTIL the ID actually expires which is retarded. Oh well.

Soo when is the server up for accounts from now? its 10am est almost lol and i think they said 4pm gst ug.

          1) Start fresh.

          2) All of you should just start reading up. If you need to install the game, thats the perfect time to do it since you'll have several hours to wait.

          http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/new...irst-info.html

          3) All MMO's are time sinks at some point. Even endgame in WoW can be a timesink. The entire point is the more you play the more money they make so they'll always want their game to be a time sink.

Yes, endgame can be fun once you get there and find a good endgame ls. But its not all about endgame, there is a lot of cool and fun stuff to do and explore before you even get there. People are too obsessed with getting to 75 that they don't take the time to stop and enjoy the game along the way. It's not a race! Do quests, do missions, explore areas, hunt some NM's, go and have fun because 75 comes fast enough without racing to it.

          4) Every server has a large portion of English speaking players. There should be no issues as long as you are playing in NA prime time.

          5) Don't even kid about that, people get extremely irritated with people that can't try to make a go of it themselves. Advice is a great thing to ask for as long as you've made the effort to find the answer yourself. (i.e. asking how to get to a certain area when there are dedicated map sites out there)

            1) That's what i'm leaning towards anyways, i just forgot the played time i had on my old character and was wondering an estimate from some more experienced players so i could make a more informed decision on it

            2) That compilation link looks pretty awesome, ill bookmark it. However, I do have some minimal knowledge of the game, i'll be able to jump right in and function fine. My friends not so much probably. The point of the question is more of a "where should we start" with the reading, not if there is anything to read. Something that has little tips and tricks a newbie might be unaware of but blatently obvious to players, things that you find out later on that would have been great use to you when you were first starting out.

            3) I know this, I have played many MMOs before (i had quite a few 50's in DAoC, played EQ a bit way back, a little bit of WoW before i realzied it was garbage, played WAR to 40 but all my friends started leaving for WotLK). I vividly remember that FFXI was much more time consuming than any other MMO i played, but this was a year or two ago.

            4) Sounds good, thanks!

            5) Sorry if i hit a nerve! Was just having some fun and really was wondering if there was anything i missed that may help us out.

Re: Can you guess what this thread is about?

On the time sink issue, a lot of things have been changed that facilitate short-session periodic play, especially in the most recent expansion, but it's still slow-going for a lot of things. More things are soloable, there's an xp ring that gives you twice the bonus xp/session with half the charges, suitable for those who don't xp nearly every day of the week. At higher levels (50s-ish +) people start fighting weak ToAU mobs with xp bonus from sanction to rake in several times the xp/hr that used to be normal. There are also a number of alternative xp sources in the form of campaign. People still bitch about the tedium of the level grind, but they also bitch about people not learning their jobs properly anymore, so I guess it's hit some kind of unhappy medium.
