  • Wrath of the lich king refugee.

Just to give you a brief over view of my departure from ffxi. I stopped playing FFXI about ~2 years ago when burning crusade came out for world of warcraft. I was always a bit nostalgic about ffxi but had a good enough time playing wow and payment was an issue (had no access to a credit card). Now the good times in wow are coming to and end with wrath of the lich king, raiding is not challenging at all and lost most of its hardcore element. I'm giving playing ffxi again serious consideration.

    Now on to my questions:

    1) Anyone else switch back to FFXI after WotLK? Whats your experience so far.

    2) One of the things I loved most of ffxi was the atmosphere and storyline. I just finished the CoP airship mission (60 cap) when I left, it would be nice to be able finish up CoP. Are there still people looking for mission groups?

    3) When I left there was a trend to move content to instances in ffxi, is this still the case? How much (H)NM camping is there to be done. (my highest level character was lvl 73 bst, so my endgame experience is limited)

    4) This is probably server specific but is there any active BST/PET linkshells still around? All bst wyrms was incredibly fun.

    5) I haven't found much specific information on what wings of the goddess added to the game. Would be nice to get a quick summary.

    6) Is the game still the same hardcore level as when I left? Not that I'm a masochist or anything but everything given to you for no effort in wow really got boring. I keep getting the feeling that the "oldschool" mmo's like FFXI and maybe EQ(never played it) will not be made again, at least in a mainstream North American release. Everything is quick to follow the wow template.

Re: Wrath of the lich king refugee.

I quit wow in September before WoTLK came out, completed Black Temple and first boss in Sunwell, never even bothered with Brutallus although my guild got him down from what I'm told. 70 Resto Druid, 70 Resto Shaman, 70 Holy Paladin(get the trend?) I just got bored of the game, it's not bad at all just not something I can play for more than a handful of months.

Anyway, CoP missions are always being shouted for. If you dont see any for a day or 2, do your own and you'll probably get some whispers.

Some of the TAoU stuff is instanced, but everything else is pretty much the same as when you left.

There are several Pet LS's around still, although sadly I can't remember them off the top of my head. I THINK the largest one was on Ramuh, but don't quote me on that.

WoTG added Campaign battles, which is a nice solo alternative for people 60+, although the full xp benefit isn't gonna be seen till you hit 70+, and parties still give out more xp. They recently added more missions to the storyline, but nothing else yet.

The game has gotten abit easier, they raised the xp given by Easy Prey and Decent Challenge monsters to the point where if I soloed I'd rarely go after anything higher(unless I'm on a good solo job like BLU/BLM/etc). They also added a new feature called Fields of Valor, which basically can give you quest similar to WoW where you can an X amount of monsters that yield xp, and you'll get that xp + xp/gil/tabs(currency for FoV) for finishing the quest. Can be done once a game day.

Even with that though, still takes some time to accomplish stuff.

Thanks for the reply! Covered most of what I was interested in. ^^

I have a question about level sync, does it mean I only need one set of gear for all my BCMN/missions/pvp that may be level capped?

Does this devalue the lower level gear prices at all on the ah?

Re: Wrath of the lich king refugee.

Yes you could go with only 1 gear set, although normal equip at that level > your level sync gear most of the time due to how the gear scales down. But DEF on most items would tend to be greater(like AF chest) if you synced it down on some occasions. But basically if you're a high level and syncing down for whatever reason, depending on the event you don't need to change gear at all.

Although if you're syncing a mage down for some event it's probably better to get SOME pieces of level cap gear to avoid resists.

Re: Wrath of the lich king refugee.

Beastmaster is amazing to solo now in ToAU and certain WoTG areas. Our XP/HR has nearly tripled compared to Original/RotZ zones (Not including bombs). I've been getting 7k/hr solo using T pets on T/VT mobs. A buddy of mine has averaged 10-15k/hr solo at 65+. The thing is tho, YOU have to find the camps yourself. Don't rely on a guide. Gotta keep checking pets/pray, and keep on using wide-scan. Sanction helps a ton as well. Especially cause you can get a refresh with Imperial Standing Points (Gained in the same way as Conquest Points).

It really depends which server you're on to find a successful BST/PET LS. I've been wanting one to do certain events with when my BST hits 75, but no, it will not happen on Ragnarok.

Not to rain on anyone's parade here, but look again at WHERE he is in CoP. He's in the late stages, after U/O. These are the missions I almost never see shouts on Diabolos server for. If you're doing Crags, Sacrarium, or up to U/O, you'll see some, but very rarely will you see anything for higher. I'd suggest that anyone coming back who's that far along seriously consider making their own groups and choosing a LS that will give them Fridays and Saturdays off to do so. If your schedule won't permit a static party for missions on those days, I might just suggest you skip coming back. I've been after them for 4 months, and it was only recently that I was able to finish the expansions. You'll run into similar problems if your LSs don't have people moving towards the endgame of WoTG while you're trying to run city-specific quests to advance the mission storyline.

Expect to do a lot of creating your own parties. Until the WotG is complete, you won't see many shouts for finishing it up. CoP is hit and miss, I very rarely see anything for TAU, and it's expected that your LS will move you through RoZ. (You'll see DM shouts, but they very rarely shout to do 16 afterwards). There are still players who need all these missions, but expect to have to work to find em.
