  • Returning player, quick question

First post, so hi everyone. ;p

Okay so I used to play FFXI like..I'd say 3 or 4 years ago. I ended up rage quitting over solo farming as a paladin. When I say rage quitting I mean "OH MY GODDDDDDDD THIS SUCKS" then logged off and deleted my characters, etc. <.<

But to the point. I'm thinking of coming back to the game but I don't know if I should grab it for 360 or PC. My PC is an old one:

    2.6ghz p4
    1gb RAM
2600 HD XT AGP graphics card
And since my CRT monitor died I'd be using my 22" LCD with a native resolution of 1680x1050. ( I know it's kinda above my PC but I got it for playing the 360 after emoing at how awful a lot of stuff looked on SDTV )

Now to the actual question: 360 or PC? I'm leaning towards 360 but I heard they freeze up and force you to restart the systemwhile in Dynamis/Campaign/Besieged? Has this been fixed? Does it only effect old models? I bought my 360 last month if that is any help with how old it is.

    Thanks in advance.

I play on my laptop that has 2.6 ghz Athlon 64 + 1 gb ram + ATI Radeon 9700. It runs just fine. So I'd also recommend PC.

Guess I'll try PC though but out of curiosity how well does your laptop hold up in Dynamis/Campaign/Besieged, or any busy area in general, MDSgt? Barely playable or easily playable?

Everyone lags in a busy area. It's still playable, but don't expect not to lag.

Your computer sounds a lot like my husbands computer, except on the graphics card. He runs just fine and plays ffxi regularly. Yes he does have lag at times especially in busy zones but so does the 360 in busy zones. Its really a toss up for you. Figure out if you want to sit back and play on a couch with a controller or if you'd rather sit at your desk and use a keyboard (if thats what you'll be using).

Playing FFXI on the 360 is pretty nice, I enjoy it at least. I have never experianced problems with freezing while in Campaign, and I have an older 360, so I don't think you'd have to worry about that.
You'll for sure need a USB keyboard to plug in though for talking...the in game keyboard just doesn't cut it. A cheap USB keyboard works just fine, mine was like 10$ I'm pretty sure. I haven't experianced an awful lot of lag anywhere, maybe a tad in Whitegate, but nothing that has me swearing over it. I like moving around with the joystick, and the menu's aren't too bad to navigate. It's personal preferance, MMO's are generally a computer genre, but FFXI works on the 360 phenomenaly.

Also, if you have a bigger TV, it's pretty awesome to play on. Can't beat a 32" plasma flatscreen!

Thats because FFXI is a console MMO. It was made for the PS2 and ported to the PC. The controls work very good on consoles for that reason.

I have to agree on playing it on the tv if you have a good one. I have a 52" lcd on the wall and when I get a chance to play downstairs I take it!

I'm not sure.. I lost my old login information, so I had to make a new account and thus have been in generally calm areas. Seems to handle the crowded area near AH fine, though.

You can use a gamepad with the computer version, you just have to get an USB adaptor for it. I play on my laptop and I have no idea what most of the keyboard shortcuts are . I, like the game itself started out on the PS2 and moved to the compter.

I'd play wherever you are most comfortable. The gamplay itself probably won't be that different between systems. And if you know anyone else who plays you could always borrow their discs for one version, and buy the discs for the other and bounce back and forth.

                      Re: Returning player, quick question

your specs arent much different to mine, p4/3ghz, 2gb ram, x1950pro graphics, 22" lcd. only reason I got 2gb ram is cos I played lotro for a while and that needed more than 1. only things i've noticed is in jeuno or wg it takes a bit to draw in all the people and it was a bit slow in campaign where u get a giant mass of npcs beating down the enemies. I've tried playing on the pc with kb/mouse and it seemed horrible. I've always used a logitech dual analogue gamepad like this one:
Cordless Rumblepad II (Refresh) PC Gamepad: Amazon.co.uk: PC & Video Games

                        Re: Returning player, quick question

Sounds like it will run fine on either-

Personally i play it on a 1st-gen 360, b/c I'm able to hook into my 27" TV- and I definitely prefer they controller/keyboard combo better than mouse/keyboard- The only things I really use the keyboard for are typing and macros- and I think most people who play on the console do macros from their controller also- I think I'm the oddball here.

That said, there are some definite advantages to running on a PC- depending how into the game you plan on getting- you can't use a parser on the 360 version, for example- and i think the graphics will be better on your PC, depending on your vid card.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Seems what I'm going to do is grab it on 360 and download it for PC and do some direct comparisons and see which I like most. And it just so happens the 2008 collection is cheaper for 360 than it is for PC. :X
