  • Version update, checking 17,679 files

    Not a typo.

After losing both my DVD drive and hard drive on my PC, I've now reinstalled on my new hard drive from the original media, but patching... ugh. The client can't even finish checking to see what files it needs to download before the server has a brainfart and drops connection. Then the next time I connect it starts checking all 17,679 files again from the beginning. (I have the number memorized by now...)

After having this problem several times in a row, I uninstalled and installed only the base game with no expansions - but it still insists on checking 17,679 files, even though some of them probably belong to expansions I don't have (installed - of course my POL account still has the content IDs registered...)

Does anyone know if there's any method for dealing with this other than "keep trying until you get lucky"? I know from past updates that if I can get past the check step to download some files before being dc'd, those files will be kept the next time I try to update, but this time it's the check itself that is taking an hour or more and getting dc's.

P.S. POL allowed me to reactivate my content IDs without any fuss and my character names were still on them; does that mean my characters definitely weren't deleted and they'll be safe until I can log in again?

If your character names where there, I'm pretty sure your characters are safe. I re-activated yesterday and went through a list of IDs, four of which had names and the others were completely blank. My characters were fine.

As for installation, I couldn't tell you since I don't play on PC.

I don't know of any way around it. My only guess would be this: If you have a trusted friend that plays FFXI on PC, get their updated POL/FFXI folder, copy the whole thing onto yous, and cross your fingers. NOTE: I have never tried this, it may not work and it may fudge things up.

Unfortunately regardless of what versions of the FFXI disks you have or buy POL is automated to recheck every file when you're updating from a fresh install on PC!

There is no way around the 17,679 each time, even if you lose connection in the middle at anytime!

Its very fickle so just make sure you don't have anything else thats using the internet on or doing something while you're updating! I've had the same issue before and had to turn off everything to finally pass this crazy check session!

My buddy said when he fresh installed with the new Vana Deil collection It took him a shorter time to install it and get it up in running. No clue if this will help you out or not. Sucks especially if you own the previously released expansions.

Best thing to do is when you finally get it installed to back it up. I have had to fresh install a couple of times. I know how bad it sucks. So now I just transfer it over from my External to my main.
