  • Howdy, sorta standard "what's a good server?" question

Howdy all. I quit early 2005-ish (joined at NA PC release), had a 74 THF/NIN (never saw a real point in hitting 75), did sky and other HNMs like Nidhogg and such. I've been thinking about coming back for some time now, as insane as that thought is.

I'm curious as to which server would be a decent one to join? Obviously people will have opinions based on their own experiences, but it's those experiences that will matter. In general, I'm looking for a server with a lower ratio of drama and jerks, and preferably one that hasn't been totally ransacked by inflation or RMT (1M gil bronze subligar? no thanks). Basically just a server that has a relatively easy-going population that might be conducive to building a character again without having to worry about getting into squabbles every hour.

To forestall a few questions/notifications, I'm very familiar with how the grind can be in the game (or at least how it was for the year+ that I played), and I know it's different from WoW and such. Not overly interested in doing HNM again (though sky might still be fun eventually). I'm more interested in building up a character again to test my skills like I did before (soloing Aquarius, duoing Adamantoise, tanking Lord of Onzozo, etc.) Keep in mind that I'm not necessarily looking to do the exact same things again, but that's an example of where I was in character development and where I'd like to get back to the general area of.

Servers with decent social/character development LS's would be nice as well. I don't want handouts or free rides, but having some people to chat and perhaps xp with would be cool. The only servers I'm not really interested in are Asura (previous server) or Remora (where lots of Asurans transferred to at one point). Oh, and if someone does catch my interest with their server, being able to get a world pass wouldn't be amiss- though I certainly wouldn't expect it.

Thanks a bunch for your time.

Most servers are pretty much the same. I've played on Seraph, Bahamut, Asura, and Fairy. I had a very short stint on Carbuncle recently, but only to level 7, so that doesn't really count.

But seriously. Mostly the same! Just go with whichever one you get placed on.

Things have changed while you were gone.

For level 75s they have even more merits, including merits to unlock job abilities/traits. Ranging from "awesome" to "near worthless". Still, they do allow you to branch out what your character can do at 75.

On RMT and inflation - It's actually deflation now. RMTs are regularly getting banned. SE is targeting their bank charaters now. I think in the last mass-delete (on the 21st last month) they got rid of around 50 billion gil.

Aquarius doesn't drop damascene cloth any more. Lord of Onzozo doesn't drop kraken club any more. (Seriously.)

Not really what you asked for, but Murphie said it all.

Yea, I had read about that the other day. Good move on SE's part, if you ask me.

Glad to hear about the deflation of prices. I remember when I left, Scorpion Harnesses were 4mil on the low side of averages. Saw a post somewhere else today that they were going for 1mil on some server. Good trend.

I figure that most servers are essentially the same, but now and again you get the one that becomes particularly known/appreciated/disliked for reason X. Wanted to just toss this out there to see if there were any bites one way or another.

        Thanks so far.
