  • Tempted to try again..

I'm a WOW addict and I've been playing world of warcraft since it came out, but I was a fan of the playstation FF series from FFVII onwards.

Christmas last year, the FFXI game was only £17 so I suggested my sister buy it me. It was the pack with the two expansions on it.

I tried a few different characters at low level in my free play period, but never got above about level 6. At the time, I didn't think the game was very easy to get into. Took me a while to find a way out of the city I started in to actually kill things.

The battle's seemed a bit boring, but maybe that's just because I was low level and didn't have many options. If I thought I was going to lose a fight, I found it annoying that the enemy would follow you indefinately unless you ran back into the city. Usually this meant I died...

It was the thought today of saving for a PS3 and probably having the chance to play the final fantasy games again as and when they came out, that I thought I might give FX11 another chance.

I've read a few threads, people have mentioned some newer expansion pack.. do I need that? or does it just open up new lands.. I really haven't got much a clue about everything in FFXI maybe I should started buffing up..

Am I missing out on something?

You really haven't gotten that far enough into the game to really appreciate it. Being a newbie is tough in this game. You're basically thrown into the world with no direction at all and no money at all.

My advice to you would be to first take up a few quests in your city. Pick up a cheap brady guide, get a job to around 10, and then start questing around the city. There's plenty of great gear out there that you can get. After that, then you'll start partying with other people. Trust me, past soloing (which this game doesn't advocate at all), the game will get progressively better and your job, whichever it is, will start to shine.

As for the expansion packs, you won't have to worry about them for awhile, as the stuff involved requires you to be at least level 30.

it shouldn't take 9 hours even if the current estimate is that.

That's a really long download you have there : O Did you install fromthe original CD game discs? There are some DVD collection now that will cut your patch time down by a ton. My last installation only took me 40 minutes downloading patches.

My personal thought tho. I think the first impression you have with the game is quite important. When I first started, I enjoyed literally every moment of the game. From the second my character set foot into the city, the first cut scene, my first worm I killed, my first mission, the first real people I met in game. I mean everything. I log on for 20 hours just exploring my city. The game was that fun for me.

I really don't know if you'll enjoy your time in this game if you think the battle was boring right at the beginning. That's what you'll spend 99% of your time doing in this game.

40mins!?? took a while to get through the 7 discs there are..

                2653/6145 files with 4hr 20min remaining...

I wonder if the first time i played I wasn't playing under the best circumstances... our internet was cancelled due to moving house, and so I had to play on my laptop on the window sill trying to get reception from next door...

i'm going to try and really absorb the game..when i get chance to play it... reading whatever everyone has to say and explore!

                    Ok the battle system..

Left click on target, left click again and menu appears, left click check to find out if I can kill it, left click attack.. run to target and wait to the end of battle.

Ok it might get more exciting later.. but I'm fond of keyboard shortcuts... is there anything to make the process more painless?

Also as a galka I find it difficult to click enemies without going into 1st person.. which kinda spoils it. Any suggestions?

                          Re: Tempted to try again..

I use the keyboard instead of clicking. You can hit "0" (talking number pad here) to target, "Enter" to bring up the menu, and "Enter" again to get into auto-attack. What class are you playing? As a Galka, I assume you're playing a damage-dealing class, which will most likely reduce the amount of key jamming you'll do. You could macro your various weaponskills to Ctrl- or Alt-1 through 0.

Coming from WoW, I will mention that FFXI's battle system is far more rigid. You'll probably be relatively stationary throughout each battle, unless perhaps you play a thief. The difference from WoW is your use of weaponskills (available when TP goes to 100% or above) and skillchains. I don't believe WoW has anything comparable to skillchains and magic bursts. Mage classes are slightly more similar to WoW in that you can actually change up what spells you cast, and can buff/debuff dynamically to react to the current needs of the party. Otherwise, you'll hear of monks (a damage dealing class) who go AFK for 30 seconds until their TP bar hits 100%, at which point they hit a weaponskill. You may enjoy playing PLD, DRK, or BLU, all of which have a lot more variety in what they throw at the enemy or the party. Unfortunately, all of those jobs require you to ding 30 before you can unlock them.

yea i read the manual, even brought it to work with me today so I can buff up!

I found I was comfortable changing to compact keyboard and leaving the mouse alone.

I've started a warrior with intention to be a good tanking class, I've died a few times...
