Getting a PC gamepad sounds quite interesting..
Did someone have a recommendation?
Well, the game was originally made for PS2, so using a PS2 controller via a USB adapter, or using a PS2-style USB controller would give you every button of functionality the PS2 version has... The controls are fairly intuitive when assigned to a controller.
Bungiefan you're right, I've looked through available gamepad's and I think ps2 is the only one i like.. amazon do it for £17.99 and an adaptor to PC for £5.99 think i might go for that.
Yeah, I used to use a PS2 controller on parport. I'll note that NTPad XP does cause FFXI to crash on exit, but it's more of an annoyance than an actual problem.
I've posted instructions on configuring for PS2 controller before, I'll dig up the link when I have a chance.
Controller is really useful for a job like Thief where you do run around in battle.
Mouse targetting in FFXI is extremely fickle. Compact keyboard to tab around (or the much more intuitive dual analog controller setup) is the way to go. One of the nicest things about FFXI's interface is that because it was designed originally with a console in mind, it has a very intuitive and relatively hassle-free interface with a console controller like the PS2's Dual Shock.
Nothing in the game is designed to require a mouse, and in fact they're much harder to do with a mouse than either keyboard or controller.
I play with a wireless key board and it's batteries went mid fight so i turned on the muse out of despiration. After a greuling fight I ran down to the nearest shop and bought 4 packs of durecells...enough said
It ain't tanking unless you get hit
To those who are about to tank I salute you.
As a THF, I'm kinda crippled without the controller. I'm often moving around while navigating menus or typing something. I have a hard time imagining effectively chasing and staying behind a moving mob from the keyboard, particularly while trying to toggle the target lock. (Hate flying is no reason not to at least TRY to land your Sneak Attack.
OTOH, a friend of mine who plays RDM uses the keyboard and mouse together (particularly the scroll wheel to cycle through spell list) with no difficulty, so ymmv.
