Just a little background: I canceled about a year and a half ago and got rid of all the codes. Recently, I wanted to play again and bought the game again thinking I couldn't come back without the codes. Then I read about someone doing it, so I tried it myself.
Here's a detail of the calls I made to playonline. For all of these calls, I was on hold for at least 30 min before talking to someone, but it was right after xbox ffxi was released, so hopefully it will be less for you.
call1: Can't come back without verifying the last 4 digits of credit card
I'm using someone else's card, so I get the info thinking it was the same.
call2: it's not the same info as the one registered with. Also, they say I need both the first 4 AND last 4 digits.
Turns out the other person had lost the original card and the info I had was from the new one. The other person goes to his bank and gets a printout of the old number.
I'm thinking great! Now I have everything I need! Not so fast...
call3: The person says they can't bring back the account without registration codes. I say that's not what the other two reps told me and that I'd read about it being done. He says there's nothing he can do, but he'll "escalate the call" and a supervisor will call me back.
I wait a day and there's no call back. I'm pretty sure that guy had no idea what he's doing. I decide to call again rather than depend on that guys competancy.
call4: I get a senior rep, and he verifies the info and proceeds with the process. Unfortunately, I'm away from my computer so I can't update the old credit card information with the new info. This guy is very helpful and obviously knowledgable. He tells me to change the info and call back the next day and ask for him.
call5 (after a call where he wasn't available): The info had been changed and he was able to go into the account. He buys a new content ID (legally he had to read to me the entire user agreement- this probably took a good 20 minutes!) and gives me the playonline ID and password and tells me that I should go to the return to vanadiel page and go from there and was ready to get off the phone. Luckily, I had tried that already and if you don't have the original reg codes, you can't use either of the forms. So, the rep has to go through the forms himself.
After everything, my characters were right back where I left them, all the items intact and everything.
