Re: I may be returning but have a few questions regarding Duos
Sorry for the late post in this thread, but I was bored at work and just found it.
Duo'ing with a partner is a great way to play FFXI. My wife and I have been playing now for about 6 months and we chose the following combo without any experience of the game, just picked what we thought we would like:
MNK & RDM
We are now MNK54/NIN27 & RDM54/WHM27
The other 2 main jobs we are lvling together are NIN and BRD, since these are quite sought after jobs for any party.
MNK and RDM make a good combination, maybe not the best out there but we've never had any serious problems. We probably spend as much time in XP parties as we do XP Duoing, just depends on our mood, but its great to have the choice. Now that I have NIN sub for my MNK I make a far better tank than MNK/WAR which means less downtime waiting for MP regen (and even then RDMs convert can be used every 10 minutes which is really great).
One problem we do have is when we want to join a party we have to say there are 2 of us, or neither can join, which eliminates us from parties asking for 6th person replacements, however generally we find we both get into a party pretty well since we compliment each other. Especially since RDMs are so popular in parties once they have refresh and dispel (my wife has to have ANON on all the time because of the party invite requests, even with flag down).
The other great thing is the combination of DD and Mage type jobs in a Duo adds up to more than just the 2 individual job skills. With the DD tanking the mage can get off all their spells without interuption. Also BRD and RDM have good debuffing abilities and the all important Sleep spells, so if you accidentally grab a link, you can sleep and deal with it later, with the added bonus of chucking in a couple of free debuffs before it wakes up.
Keep your lvls roughly the same, and if you have a particular job you want to solo, then great, you can go your own ways with that job and not have to worry about keeping the same lvls (I have RNG at 24, she has BLM at 20 and DRG at 8 or so).
Another useful thing is you always have someone to help you transfer rare items like Mann Heads to your alts etc, without having to wait for a trusted LS person to come online.
Also, if you want to split the jobs in the game between you (DD/Tank against Magey type jobs) then you can get a bunch of money selling the quested scrolls you will never use, like the NIN or Tele scrolls. She will never be an RDM/NIN while I'm always subbing NIN for Duoing so there is nearly 2m in gil selling some easy quest items.
Basically I can't recommend Duo'ing enough in this game, the hardest part is finding a partner who likes the same game you do, and with the same enthusiasm to play it all the time.
One word of warning, you might have a few rows in-game during heated situations. There have been more than a few times when I've taken the lead to run somewhere with my wife following me (sometimes on /follow), only to find she looked at the wall or something and then looked back and lost me. Nothing more frustrating than having to wait for someone to catch up when their only job was to bloody follow you, lol. Anyway I digress
We are probably gonna try SMN & SMN at some point, although my lack of Mage lvling will be a problem I think for a suitable sub.
Hope some of the above helps another couple find their way to FFXI, its really a great game to play together.
