  • So, I'm returning later today.

I'm buying a brand-new copy of FFXI later today- while I know the game has gone downhill in some ways, I've too many fond memories and an overpowering interest in the game as it is a year later.

However, I never got past level 20 when I first played- this time, I want to cap out a character, and actually enjoy this wonderful game, and take my time so it doesn't feel like work.

My good friend and I are returning at the same time. This will be our third or fourth time in and out of the game; however, I've never really experienced it each time I return, as I promptly quit due to some sort of exterior problem.

This time I'm determined to stay. I'm determined to stick to one character, make friends, and enjoy the wealth of content FFXI has to offer in as long a time as it takes.

I'm posting this to ask for advice. I'll be making a Hume warrior, and I was considering the Remora server, as that seems to have a fairly nice economy and an intelligent, fun, playerbase.

Anyone have any tips for traversing Vana'Diel, and actually having fun? I don't have huge piles of time to commit anymore, but I can play a while on weekends, and good 1-2 hours every weekday. What server might be good? Is earning Gil really as difficult as it sounds?

I really want to come back and have fun. However, I'm still a little dubious concerning all the negativity. A friend in my WoW guild compared playing FFXI to "pounding nails into your dick", but I remember all the good times I had.

Thanks for any and all help I get in advance! :D

I'm sorry your friend in WoW didn't like FFXI, and I'm sorry at some point nails were actually pounded into his genitals. FFXI is a bit, if not a lot, more intellectual than WoW so you could have asked a blind man how much he enjoyed watching a silent film and have gotten a better response.

FFXI is a game you can commit to, something you wont tire of within the free month provided to you, so you can expect it isn't going to be fast paced. Not much has changed since release. People are now more open minded about party structure, the economy is a bit, if not a lot, worse but that's due to the combination of gil sellers and the lack of gil leaving the economy.

To enjoy the game you'll probably want two main jobs, which will require you to level multiple sub jobs. If your main jobs share the same sub jobs then you're off a little easier. I'd suggest leveling a job that you love, and on the side a job that gets easy invites that you still enjoy. At least this way when you really want to make progress you can, and when you want to play a job you really love seeking wont seem as bad as it used to.

Make sure you always do missions when you can, and that you're completely prepared when you do them. They can be very enjoyably if you succeed, but if you fail it's gonna suck. Completing a few missions between long level grinds can be very refreshing.

Always do your job well. Others might not notice it, but you'll feel better when the party is over.

    That's all I've got. :D
