  • Content ID/undeleting characters information

Ok. I'd like this thread to have all the be all end all information regarding cancelling your PoL account, cancelling content IDs, losing and regaining characters, and the differences in the approaches. The problem is that as I research through various threads, there are many varying opinions and interpretations of the User Ageements. You almost need a law degree to interpret them correctly. Add to that the confusion is compounded by the fact that the online agreements differ from the manual, but I'll use the online ones because they should be more up to date. Finally, there are inconsistencies in reports from players who are in similar situations, but have different outcome.

Mainly, I'm using the Square-enix Im Not Happy!!!!! thread as a recent source. What I'll do for now concentrate on what is known to be accurate and consistent. First the easy part...

    Character Recovery Support Now Available

Here's the information regarding character recovery. Your character had to have been deleted within the last 90 days for it to work and only works for one character (mules excluded). It is a bit dated, but I've seen no announcement from SE amending or updating this service. Please use with discretion. You only get one (1) chance to use this service. Use it wisely.

    Character Recovery Support Now Available

We have recently received many inquiries concerning the recovery of deleted characters. After a discussion with our development team and administrative staff, we have decided to introduce a character recovery support service.

Players who apply must agree to the terms and conditions below before contacting the Information Center for support.

We will start accepting applications for character recovery from 1/28/2004. Please note that we will not accept applications before the above date.

    * As stated in the character deletion warning message, deleted character data is treated as "permanently lost". We typically do not accept character recovery requests. Please use extreme caution when deleting your characters.
    * This one-time support option is currently offered free of charge. However, this support may be fee-based in the future.

    [Conditions for Recovery]
    - Recovery is only available once per PlayOnline ID, with a limit of 16 characters.
    - In the best-case scenario, the character can be restored to its state immediately prior to deletion.
    - Character(s) deleted more than 3 months ago will not be covered by this service.
    - If the applicant or a third party has created another character with the same name, then the restored character's name must be changed.

    * Please contact us to confirm if character data can be recovered.
    * We cannot return any items that were on auction or in the delivery box prior to deletion.
    * Please refer to the Q&A section for more information. You can find it by selecting [Q&A] => [Q&A Database] followed by Number [Q12158] and [Q12457] from the FINAL FANTASY XI title page.
    * Please note that under certain conditions, the recovery service may be unavailable even if the applicant is eligible.

There's this also, last updated "2005/04/27." Ironically enough, it says "Created: 2003/06/09" which was before the "01/23/2004" date above. Maybe the JPs had this service way back then:

    Question
A family member deleted my player character. Please restore it.

    Answer

Character recovery support is only possible once per POL ID. Our Information Center will contact the owner of the account for player for confirmation.

    [Conditions for Recovery]
    - At best, the character can be restored to its immediate pre-deletion state.
    - We do not return any item(s) that was on auction at the auction house and or in the delivery box.
    - Only possible once per POL ID.
    - Recovery will be available for character(s) deleted within the past 3 months, but may also fail if the deletion date has exceeded this period.
    - If petitioner or other player has created another character with the same name, then that name must be changed.
    - It takes several business days for the operation to be done.

You have been connected to FFXI TSR John.

FFXI TSR John: Hello, Andrew, thank you for contacting the PlayOnline Information Center. Just a few moments while I review your question, please.

      Andrew Young: Hello John.

Andrew Young: That's just a generic question, I have a few other's to ask as well,
      if that is ok.

FFXI TSR John: Sure, go ahead.

Andrew Young: Well, as you know, FFXI - USA has been around for about 2 years now.

Andrew Young: BBut, on forums, there has always been a BIG discussion over the
canceling of content ID's, and haveing to buy

Andrew Young: another copy of FFXI for a new CD-Key

Andrew Young: As of _my_ understanding of the Policy, if you Cancel your content
ID's (FFXI and Tetra Master), your POL Account (ex: AAAA1111) is safe forever

Andrew Young: Because PlayOnline is a free service to everyone.

Andrew Young: (This in turn does not guarentee the life of your characters for instance, because they may be deleted after 3 months)

Andrew Young: So, pretty much we (the users of alla, and ffxionline), are looking for the end all discussion of this topic

Andrew Young: And, have you revised your policy on char. recovery since Jan '04?

FFXI TSR John: You are correct. Canceling the content IDs does not remove the credit card. You will have access to the Play Online viewer as long as the credit card is valid. The three month policy has changed. Now you have twelve months to reactivate the characters before they are deleted.

Andrew Young: Ok, that makese sense, but, if the content id's are canceled, and say a year is passed, will we have to buy a new FFXI CD Key?

Andrew Young: Or, as long as we still have our old one, can we come back to FFXI with new characters?

FFXI TSR John: No, but you will need to purchase a new content ID. If you lose your FFXI reg code, you will have to purchase a new copy of the game.

Andrew Young: Ok, this is what I thought.

Andrew Young: Lastly, say someone were to quit the game for over a year, and since then their information has changed.

Andrew Young: And they have forgotten their PlayOnline (Henceforth PoL) ID.

Andrew Young: But, they still have their reg. codes, can they retreive their account?

Andrew Young: Baised soly on the reg. codes in the manuel?

Andrew Young: Wow, that was a really bad sentance, I'm sorry.

FFXI TSR John: We have to verify the name, date of birth, address, first and last 4 numbers of credit card, and last 4 digits of POL reg code. We make acceptions with some information, but the credit card is a must have.

Andrew Young: What if the credit card has sense changed?

Andrew Young: As seen in this topic on FFXIonline.com: http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50014

FFXI TSR John: We have to verify the credit card that is currently registered on the account. If you no longer have the card, we suggest finding it on an old statement, or by contacting the bank/credit card company.

Andrew Young: Yes, this is what we sugested to the person, but they didn't listen.

Andrew Young: I have one last question.

Andrew Young: I promise, this is it.

Andrew Young: As you may know, USA FFXI does not support the input of other languages, namly Japanese.

Andrew Young: At one time, there was word from square enix, that sharing the Japaense version of FFXI in a .ISO format was ok.

Andrew Young: (uploading an image of the disc to the internet, and sharing it with friends)

Andrew Young: Is this still allowed?

FFXI TSR John: We don't have record of ever stating that file sharing is ok. It is ok
to copy the software for your own backup.

Andrew Young: Well, I ment if you had a copy of FFXI USA,

Andrew Young: would having a copy of FFXI JP backup be ok?

FFXI TSR John: If you backup your JP copy of ffxi, that should be fine.

      Andrew Young: Ok, thank you.

Andrew Young: Thank you for clearing up alot of the common misconceptions about ffxi's policy's

      And there you have it!
FC, format this as you will~.

            Re: Content ID/undeleting characters information

I just noticed "John" was referring to character reactivation due to cancelling content IDs when he said "twelve months." He didn't really address the Character recovery Service by itself. I'd love to assume that the recovery service has the same policy change, but I think it would be unwise to make that jump in conclusion...

"The three month policy has changed. Now you have twelve months to reactivate the characters before they are deleted."

This policy change is not documented anywhere. Could you post it under "Important Notices" on http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/polnews/news.shtml please? Thanks.

Okay. I'm gonna try to put together information regarding PoL account and Content IDs here. As a result this post may be heavily editted until I feel its perfect/accurate enough. I'll start with Q/A from the PoL site.

                Question
How do I cancel a Content ID?

                Answer
To cancel a Content ID, go to the Tetra Master top page, "Content ID,"and select "Cancel." Follow the instructions on screen. Please note that you will need your PlayOnline ID and PlayOnline password at this time. Even if you cancel the Content ID for Tetra Master, your player data and card collection will be saved for three months. After that, all data will be lost.

                Question
Can I become a PlayOnline member again after cancelling the PlayOnline service?

                Answer
You can become a member again after cancelling PlayOnline. If you return to PlayOnline within three months of cancellation, you can restart the same service without having to complete the regular registration process. In this case, use the "Service Restart Procedure" when logging in to PlayOnline. If you return to PlayOnline three months after cancellation, you must register anew.
In a nutshell, this is saying that it is better to cancel your Content ID rather than your PoL account. Your PoL account is bound to your Content ID and cost nothing. You get charged for having active Content IDs, so if you cancel your IDs you don't get charged.

That being said, Inutrunks recently found out via FFXI TSR John that "The three month policy has changed. Now you have twelve months to reactivate the characters before they are deleted."

I recently attempted to reactivate my PoL account. I had my PoL ID, and my password however when I attempted to log in it informed that me the ID or password where incorrect. I used the live chat program in an attempt to figure out what was going on. the following is a transcript of that chat session, minus sensative personal information.

FFXI TSR Gary A.: Hello, Robert, thank you for contacting the PlayOnline Information Center. Just a few moments while I review your question, please.

FFXI TSR Gary A.: Your account has been deleted for being unsubscribed for too long. Unfortunately, we are not able to be reactivate the account. If you would like to continue playing you will need to buy a new game to register a new account.

Robert Greiner: ah ok, suspected as much. Thanks for the help.

Wow. This is a godsend for me. My craving for FFXI is returning and I want my character back. I dont even care if I have no equipment to start off with. The character is moreso my little memories of prior Vana'diel experiences. I'm going to reactivate my account ASAP. (WoW got boring really quickly.)

                      Re: Content ID/undeleting characters information

I thought I might share this with others. My question was if I stopped my content ID on Dec 31st, 05 and want to activate it on April 1st, 06, will it still be there.

FFXI TSR Jereme: If a Content ID was cancelled we can only gurnatee it for up to 90 days, however there is a possibility that it will be available for up to 12 months.

FFXI TSR Jereme: After 12 months however the Content ID will not be available.

FFXI TSR Jereme: If you canceled one or more Content IDs, you can reactivate them by using the following steps:
                      - Start the PlayOnline Viewer, log in and go to Games.
                      - Click on FINAL FANTASY, and click on Content ID.
                      - Click on Reactivate ID, here you receive a list of which Content ID have been canceled.
                      - Select a Content ID in the list and click Next, here you can accept the fees to reactivate an old Content ID.

Me: so does that mean that it's 90 days and not by the calender month?

FFXI TSR Jereme: If the Content ID is listed with the character then you would be able to reactivate the character, if it is not listed, then it would not be available to be reactivated.

Me: ok, but I want to know if it'll be there come april 1st, because technically it's three months, jan, feb, march

Me: I've heard of stories where they were able to recover it within the 12 months, but not everything was there.

FFXI TSR Jereme: All we can guarantee is 90 days. After that there is no guarnatee.

FFXI TSR Jereme: There is the possibility that it can be available for up to 12 months, as I stated earlier.

Me: so it's 90 days, and so it doesn't go by the calender month?

FFXI TSR Jereme: If items were not on a character when it was reactivated, then the items were removed before the charactrer was cancelled.

FFXI TSR Jereme: Are there any other issues I can assist you with right now, Jeremy?

Me: Yes, I want to know if it's 90 days or the calender month that it goes by

Me: because some months have more than 30 days

FFXI TSR Jereme: We go by 90 days.

FFXI TSR Jereme: Are there any other issues I can assist you with right now, Jeremy?

Me: No, that will be all, thanks for the help

FFXI TSR Jereme: Thank you for visiting our PlayOnline

So it seems like it's 90 days that it'll be there for sure, 12 months maybe.

                        Re: Content ID/undeleting characters information

I commend the efforts of Intrunks, fastcart and those taking time to add valuable information to a thread like this. One thing that has always seemed fishy to me, is how SE offered an official "Return to Vanadiel" promotion, which from what I remember allowed people who quit the game from any time period to return. If they can do it then, why not at any time?

                          Re: Content ID/undeleting characters information

ICR Jereme can bite my ass, here's the discussion I had w/that asshat 2 days ago about getting my 71 WHM restored. Mind you, I had 2 different conversations prior, and BOTH CSR's said that they WOULD indeed be able to restore the account.

ICR Jereme: Hello, Franklin, please give me a moment while I familiarize myself with this chat session.
                          Franklin Williams: Ok
ICR Jereme: The error message you are receiving when you log into the PlayOnline Viewer regarding the mail server count is only a temporary issue and will not affect the sending and receiving of your email.
Franklin Williams: Well, the thing is, I've been getting it ever since I first started playing.
Franklin Williams: Well, should I say originally
ICR Jereme: Frank I do show that we did not bill this account in April, however I do show that in April 3 Content IDs were reactivated.
Franklin Williams: My account started during the NA release
Franklin Williams: and I cancelled awhile back, and just got it reactivated =)
ICR Jereme: The amount of 29.90 that was billed on May 1, was for the fees for April and May.
                          ICR Jereme: Sorry mistell.
Franklin Williams: that is probably what you are showing. !? 29.90? On May 1?
                          Franklin Williams: oh heheheh
Franklin Williams: scared me there for a minute, my wife woulda had my head
ICR Jereme: Who is your Internet Service Provider, and how do you connect to the internet? eg: dialup, cable, dsl, etc.
Franklin Williams: Time Warner Cable, Cable connection.
Franklin Williams: However, when I first started playing, I was on DSL, but had the same issue, I just didn't bother w/it.
ICR Jereme: Do you have anything along the lines of a firewall, antivirus, parental-control, IM, pop-up blocker software, router, proxy, Internet Connection Sharing. If you have any, what is the name of each item you have?
Franklin Williams: I have the cable connection going thru a router for my 360
Franklin Williams: its a D Link Router
ICR Jereme: If you have a router, the following ports need to be allowed to pass through. TCP 25, 80, 110, 443 & 1024 - 65535 and UDP 50000 - 65535.
Franklin Williams: Hurmm...ok, lemmie copy that down. Another question if possible, I submitted a request to reactivate a content ID that was apperently deleted, do you show it being restored just yet? Or could you give me an approx eta by chance if not?
ICR Jereme: I do show that the request was submitted today regarding the cahracter restore request. There is no ETA on when the restore process will be completed, however it is normally 5 to 7 working days. An email will be sent to your PlayOnilne email account when the restore process is compelted.
Franklin Williams: I was going to log in, and play, I'd have to buy(?) another content ID I guess to do so, but, I don't want to botch up the character that I'm trying to get restored.
                          Franklin Williams: Ahh ok
Franklin Williams: Could you walk me thru the process to I guess, start a new character till the one Im trying to get restored is ready to play?
ICR Jereme: I would suggest not creating any new character during the restore process, as that can cause the restore process to fail.
Franklin Williams: The original CSR told me that the slot would have to be open in order for the character to be replaced, but I didn't quite understand what he was talking about...ohhh...ok, so, no FF Online till I get my charcter back then eh?
ICR Jereme: He means the Content ID needs to be active, with no charcter on it.
ICR Jereme: There is no way to set which Content ID a character will be made on.
ICR Jereme: Are there any other issues I can assist you with right now, Franklin?
Franklin Williams: Ok, so, at this point and time, do you show that I have a Content ID active? I mean, would I need to purchase one, in order for the character to be restored to be placed on when it's ready?
ICR Jereme: You do not need to purchase a new Content ID.
                          Franklin Williams: Ok
ICR Jereme: You just need to ensure the current Content ID has been reactivated.
Franklin Williams: Humm..can you see if it has been?
Franklin Williams: or do I need to do that
ICR Jereme: Just a few minutes, please. Thank you for your patience, Franklin.
Franklin Williams: Thanks for the help, sorry for I guess what seems to be silly inquiries, I've just never really been all that great w/the PoL interface -(*
ICR Jereme: I show that there are no Content IDs avaialble to be reactivated. Unfortunately this means that the restore requet will most likely fail.
ICR Jereme: However you may be able to reactivate the cahracter yourself.
ICR Jereme: Go to www.playonline.com and select the Return Home to Vana'diel Campaign.
ICR Jereme: Then select Part B.
ICR Jereme: You will only need your PlayOnline ID, password, and one registration code.
Franklin Williams: I tried that, it said that I wasnt eligable, so I thats when I contacted CSR to find out why, and was told I'd have to get a "restoration"
Franklin Williams: Should I try that again?
ICR Jereme: You will need to try Part B, not Part A, you are ineligible for part A
Franklin Williams: Ok, lemmie try that real fast.
Franklin Williams: Yep, same thing, saying I wasn't eligable
                          Franklin Williams: er, eligble
Franklin Williams: ugh, sorry, my keying today is horrific
ICR Jereme: Just a few minutes, please. Thank you for your patience, Franklin.
                          Franklin Williams: Np
ICR Jereme: Which registration code are you using?
ICR Jereme: What was the exact error message?
Franklin Williams: The one from my original game. The thing w/that was, when I first purchased the game at release, disk 2, had some type of error, so I had to use a friends. When I stopped playing, I removed the game from my PC, so last night I picked up a new copy to load up, but still had the old info
ICR Jereme: What was the exact meassage listed on the application?
Franklin Williams: The original registration code was: ****-****-****-****-****. The message says "You did not use FFXI services before cancelling your PoL account, you are not eligble for this campaign".
ICR Jereme: That error means that they were unable to locate any characters on our server.
                          ICR Jereme: To be reactivated.
ICR Jereme: Also since there has been no billing for the last 12 months, it would appear that there have been no Cotnent IDs that can be reactivated.
Franklin Williams: Which is why he submitted the character restoration
ICR Jereme: We can only perform a character restore request if the original Content ID is available, and it was deleted by the user within the last 12 months
Franklin Williams: apperently when I stopped playing, and cancelled the account, something happened btwn that time and now that deleted the characters, I can assure you though I didnt. About 3 months ago, I contacted a CSR in the same manner I am now, and asked him about reactivating, as there was a rumor it could be done. He told me my characters would be on "file" till this November.
ICR Jereme: I actually show that you were informed that the status of the account was that it was unsusbcribed, and should be available until November, however he did state that the cahrcters were gone and could not be recovered. This campaign was not mentioned until about a week before it began. There was never any guarantee that the character would ever be able to be recovered.
Franklin Williams: No, I asked specifically about the characters, my main concern was that I would be able to reactivate my 71 WHM if I did indeed start playing again.
ICR Jereme: And the past agent stated specifically that the characters were deleted and could not be recovered.
ICR Jereme: If the Return Home to Vana"diel campaign is not showing any characters, then there are no characters that can be recovered.
Franklin Williams: No, he, didnt. I would not of even gone thru all Im going thru now for a character that isnt there.
ICR Jereme: Also since there are no Content IDs that can be reactivated the character restore process will not be able to be completed.
Franklin Williams: And even then, the CSR I spoke w/today, after going thru the same thing I am now told me that he could to a restoration to restore a character or Content ID, or whatever it is.
ICR Jereme: Sir I have a record of the past chat record, and the agent did in fact state that the cahracter was deelted.
ICR Jereme: The previous agent did not look at the status of your Content Ids, he simply took your request as you had requested him to do.
ICR Jereme: You asked me to check the status of your Content IDs, and from looking at that information it appears there are none that can be reactivated on this account.
Franklin Williams: I didn't request the Restoration, he suggested it after he found that I wasn't able to use the Return to Vana'diel option.
ICR Jereme: I am going to tell you that the restore request will ail, and that you are unfortuantely not able to perform the Return Home campaign.
ICR Jereme: Are there any other issues I can assist you with right now, Franklin?
Franklin Williams: Yes, you can tell me why 2 other CSRs told me I would be able to get a specific character restored/actiaved, and your telling me I cant.
Franklin Williams: Why would he even bother getting all the information about the character, if it wasnt possible
ICR Jereme: You were never given any specific gurantee that you would get your character back, the previous agent in January did actually state to you that the character could not be recovered.
ICR Jereme: The last agent sent in a request based on the error message you received on the campaign application. However he did not look at the status of your Content IDs.
ICR Jereme: Since you have no Cotnent IDs that can be reactivated, I can tell you that the character restore will fail.
ICR Jereme: Are there any other issues I can assist you with right now, Franklin?
Franklin Williams: Again, why would I opt to repurchase a game, if the character I had continously inquired about would not be available. Again, that was my MAIN concern in the whole matter. Earlier today I even told the CSR that was the specific one I wanted, that I was getting an error on the Content ID, which is when he told me it was apperently deleted.
Franklin Williams: I don't know if your missing something, or not reading all of whatever info is in front of you, but I was never told that the WHM on my account would NOT be possible to reactivated.
ICR Jereme: Sir part of the character restore request process, does state that we can never gurantee that the restore process is 100% succesful.
ICR Jereme: Are there any other issues I can assist you with right now, Franklin?
Franklin Williams: Yes he did tell me that there was a chance of an error. But I'd be happy to take that risk. Now your telling me that there is no chance whatsoever of the character being restored.
ICR Jereme: It appears you have no other issues you need assistance with. If this is incorrect, please come back to the chat and I will be happy to assist you.
ICR Jereme: Thank you for visiting our PlayOnline Chat line, Franklin! Take care and hope to see you online!

                          Now, here's my gripe.
                          1. Whats the friggin RIGHT way to cancel an account? I had always been under the impression, the only way to do so, was to stop paying, and hit the "Cancel" button. Apperently SoE doesn't work that way~

                          2. I was never told in Jan. that the account was deleted. I asked specifically about the lvl71 WHM and was assured it was there, and on file till this Nov., afterwards it would be gone. Never once did the CSR mention anything at all about a Content ID not being there or anything else.

                          3. I had gone thru all of this not even 5hrs previously, the CSR looked at everything there was to look at, found that my PoL was still active, and then told me the only way I could get the character back was thru a restoration process, and even then, he couldnt give me a 100% guarantee. I was fine w/that, just the possibility alone made it worth trying.

                          4. The wanker above first tells me that the restore is going to definitely fail, then says theres a chance it will fail, well which is it?? If he had the information in front of him from the conversation I had w/the CSR back in Jan., why not just quote word for word...ala copy/paste so I he could show exactly that the CSR at that time definitely told me the character was gone instead of just saying "he said this"

                          5. Finally and not least of all, he was rude, and you could tell he wasn't even trying to listen to the actual QUESTION I was trying to ask him. I will definitely be contacting someone about his lack of professionalism. I worked in Call Centers for Bellsouth, and no matter what, barring the customer started cursing you, and using derogatory remarks, you don't "disconnect" on a call like that, ever.

So whatever...I'm irked that I can't get the account back, but oh well, it's not the end of the world. It is however annoying the amount of crap you have to go thru to try to figure out how Sony has all this set up. As much as there is to the game I like, it's the PoL interface, numerous registration codes, login passwords, and confusing and often contradictory online/manual literature that I really think put alot of people thru hell trying to get working right. I've heard even worse stories about the Xbox 360 setup though, so I guess we (PC users) have it easy~
