  • Maybe returning... 1 question.

    Hi

Might be returning, used to play this game on release date but got sick of Square not fixing their engine.

My old computer when i played this on release date ran the game like crap, which is fine... i had a terrible computer to begin with so i can't really complain.

About 3 years ago however, i purchased the following.

    Q6600 @ 3.20ghz
    Nvidia 8800GT 1GB
    4GB Ram
    Windows XP

Surprisingly, the game still ran like crap! I know the fps limit is 30 and that's not why I'm complaining so hear me out.

If i was in a party and another party was near, fps would go from 30 to 10-11.... I could be in the Dunes for example, which has nothing graphical but sand and some trees, fps would hit 10 just from 6-7 people being on the screen. This is not acceptable... that computer runs Dragon Age 2, Team Fortress 2, WoW, RIFT, Portal 2, Assassins Creed, and MW2 on max settings, how can it fail so miserably on a Directx8 game, especially in such plain and boring areas?

    I now have the following..

    i5 2500k @ 4.50ghz
    Nvidia 480GTX
    8GB Ram
    Windows 7 64

do i make another attempt with this new machine.. or am i expected to get the same results?

game is going to run about the same, your graphics card will not really matter to much for FFXI. But your CPU is leagues ahead of your old one, so I would say you will see a difference.

When I still played I ran FFXI with pretty much the same setup without a problem.

Usually when this issue pops up it's a driver problem. I have vague memories of similar threads popping up and the OP would eventually fix the issue by using a specific version of the NVidia drivers. Try searching the forums for "drivers" and words like "nvidia," "geforce" or "lag."

        Re: Maybe returning... 1 question.

I had 3-10 FPS outside of my Mog House with a Radeon 9600 Pro on XP, which ran at 29-30 FPS until WotG released. The frame rate seems to be wonky with certain cards on XP. I had to switch entirely back to PS2 after that until I built a new computer running Win7.

SE's only response was telling me to use 5 year old drivers for that card, which bumped me up to 12 FPS, but I fell back to 3-5 while in a party, and I was a WHM in a CoP set at the time.

Don't bother ... as someone aptly pointed out on another website, this game is old. There's just way too much issues with Vista and Windows 7 for SE to even bother with it. There's a handful of players that got lucky and kudos to them. I heard having a dual boot with Windows XP as a secondary OS increases your chances significantly but that's too much of a hassle for just one game (unless you REALLY want to play it) There's just a lot more games out there especially since RIFT has been out and SW:TOR on the horizon and of course FFXIV. Diablo III is another heavyweight RPG title with MMO leanings and others (Guild Wars, Tera)

I've been playing rift recently, and I have been really into that game. Right now they are doing a 7 day free trial, and 50% exp bonus with only 9.99 USD for the collector's edition. I love the game so far.

Its like they took all the good parts of WoW, mixed it with a great community, and added their own stuff to it.
