  • Need some help with POL, new computer and windows 7

My old computer died on me, and Dell sent me an alienware computer to replace my XPS machine. Needless to say, much upgrades to my hardware all around. Also of note, my old system was XP, and my alienware is operating on Windows 7.

For some reason POL does not want to start up. I installed FFXI, hit the POL icon, and nothing happens. I tried running it in XP service pack 2 compatibility mode and when I do that, after I hit the POL button a message comes up asking me if I want to allow POL to make changes to my computer. I hit yes, a little blue circle appears around my mouse like the computer is processing something, but nothing happens.

Tempted to do an uninstall and reinstall in case I neglected to do something during the installation process. Otherwise I don't know what to do.

One thing that comes to mind is that I'm using my disks that I bought when the game first came out, and when each expansion was released, I wouldn't need to get the latest version of the FFXI collection would I? I'm just wondering if the latest version of the FFXI collection would be more compatible with Windows 7 or not, but I don't think that should make any difference.

Use the Vista POL client from playonline.com. You can buy the latest Ultimate collection if you so wished, it also works just fine.

You will also have to (unfortunatly) run POL.exe as Administrator.

Oh, and in order to install the Vista POL client instead of the one that came on the original disks, you will have to uninstall everything, POL and each expansion. After that, install the downloaded POL client, then FFXI, then Zilart, then CoP, the ToAU, then WoTG. They must be installed in order or it will not work.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

In my experience, that isn't true. When I first got Vista and couldn't get POL to work I only had to download the Vista client, uninstall the one from the CD, and install the Vista POL client. The same thing applied to Windows 7 when I got it. No need to reinstall everything.

        No need to reinstall everything.
Too late, I already uninstalled everything. I may have installed the expansions out of order as well, kinda thinking I installed ToAU last, but not sure.

Thanks all! Gonna see if I can get the download when I go onto campus today for tutoring. Hopefully I'll have it up and downloading tonight!

          Gah, new problem.

Just finished the download to update the POL viewer, and it asked me to restart POL. When I try to restart the viewer, now I get a message saying:

Failed to replace the file "C:\Program files(x86)\PlayOnline\SquareEnix/Playonlineviewer/polhook.dll" Please restart the Playonline Viewer.

I just keep getting that message and it won't let me restart.

And just so you know, steps taken were:

download and installed windows 7 version of POL, installed FFXI > ROTZ >COP > TOAU > WOTG

Started up POL as Admin, it worked in it's default windows XP mode so I kept it at that, works in windows Vista mode too. Started POL update, and now here I am.

Uninstall it, make sure to run as admin.

Also, did you name this folder - Program files(x86)

You shouldn't need to use XP mode, and shouldn't use it if using the Vista client.

Vyuru, I never had to use compatibility mode and had no install or play issues. It sounds exactly like the way I installed it except for that.

                Good and bad news.

I have it working, however I have forgotten my POL password and have not been able to find where I wrote it down >.<

Experimenting with trying to remember what it was.

My POL password was set to be saved, and I transferred my old computer's files to an external hard drive, isn't there some way to find the POL password by looking in the files? If so can someone PM it to me?

Or is there any other way to get POL password recovery? I have all of my other information.
