XBox 360 FFXI Ultimate Collection Error

I got the disc brand new, no scratches on it. When I try to play it, I get an error about the disc being unreadable. When I try to install it, it says that the PlayOnline Viewer cannot be installed (FFXI itself isn't showing up to install). Now I had this issue before with the Vana'diel Collection last year when I tried to play, but I don't remember the workaround, and have since upgraded my HDD so I don't have it installed anymore.

Any ideas, or anyone remember the solution to the issue?

Normally I wouldn't double post, but I saw a few people had seen my thread and wanted to bring this to their attention again (in case they have a similar issue or know anyone with a similar issue).

The issue with the XBox 360 not being able to read the disc, has nothing to do with either the disc or the console being defective. It's due the the NXE update Microsoft rolled out a good while ago.

Now, for whatever reason, the way to fix this issue, is actually to play a song from either the HDD of the XBox, or from a removable media source. Every article I found to fix this issue involved using an iPod and downloading the codex to the 360 to listen to the music, then play a song, and while the song is playing, load FFXI, which should work.

I was getting aggravated, because I don't own an iPod, so I finally had an epiphany: Why not load a song onto my USB drive and play that? So I threw a song onto my USB drive, plugged it into the USB port on my 360, and played it. While it was playing, I tried to play FFXI, and it booted up like normal, problem solved.

As the game is just now starting to install for me, I haven't gotten an opportunity to test if this is a permanent fix or not, so I will post again in here if I encounter any other issues, or if this works permanently.

The "iPod" trick that some have been calling it is not permanent. It has saved me multiple times though. The problem causing the error is not properly logging out of ffxi/playonline. I ran into the same problem when my game froze and I had to do a hard reboot of the xbox.

At least it can be fixed using the trick, but it seems pretty silly to me.....

I just got the disc, so I wasn't even able to get into PlayOnline yet. I was having an issue getting it to read initially so I could install it and get into PlayOnline.

I did get it installed, so tonight after work I'll patch it up and we'll see what happens.

As a side note this trick works while playing any music from you HDD. I just ripped music from a regular music CD to my HDD Went into my HDD, played the CD I just ripped and while it was playing put my FFXI disc in. The game loaded right up!

Stupidest thing I have ever heard of but it worked.
