  • Xbox360 issuses... ...again

Ok, so I finally found a copy of Vana'diel Collection 08, and now it seems I'm at another delemma: after about a day of being back online, it seems now my disc is unreadable. The copy I got was from a local GameStop and was only the disc. Now, you guys know I'm a FFXI vet and know that a disc-only sell is w/o a code, but I don't need the codes, just the disc to install and run. However, now I'm bereft of the disc again.

My question is, barring going out or getting online and ordering another one, is there a way to "clean" or repair the cd so that I don't have to get another one, or am I hosed and needing to get another disc (and, by extension, return the one I have)? It seems every effort I've made to play since my return to the States has met with failure, and is seriously getting on my nerves.

To add insult to injury, when my game locked up and I DC'd, I was right in the middle of a Beseiged. Was gonna get good EXP off it too.

Depends on why it is unreadable. Is it scratched or is the Xbox just bipolar?
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

Well, if it's scratched there might be a way. Dunno if you can do it with Xbox stuff, but I have gotten one or two used PS/PS2 games where the disc had somehow been cleaned/resurfaced and they work fine. Ehrgeiz and Ico for those interested. Although I forget if Ico was just in perfect condition or if it had been cleaned/resurfaced like Ehrgeiz had been.

Smudges a soft cloth works well. For anything else I have no clue.

You might want to try "Ye Olde Toothpaste" trick, but I recommend taking the disc back to the store and exchanging if possible.

If you have a Novus Plastic Polish kit novuspolish it'll work well to clean a disc too. My yearbook CD from highschool was ruined because I left it out in my car and it got some wicked scratches on it. I found a video on youtube of how to use the Novus polish on cds to fix scratches. I buffed the scratches two times and after that the CD was readible, so I burned a copy of the disc just in case it became unreadible again. I only recommend the Novus polish if you have some around, I wouldn't go out of the way looking for some. I just happened to have mine laying around because I bought it a few years ago to use on my car taillights since it was recommended by some people from the Reatta Forum.

The game is probably trying to tell you something.

The 360 has had some problems with being unable to read discs from time to time from what I've heard, so unless you scratched it recently (or it was already scratched and just installed by miracle) you should probable try to check on solutions on the brick's forums, I'm pretty sure there's at least a few threads on the subject.

Do music stores in the States provide disc repair services? Some here do, but it's going to involve you getting out and spending money either way.

I'll see what I can do with the disc first (atm, it looks rather clean and undamaged, even looking at it at an angle under the light, but I could be missing something) before I go out and head on down to Dallas and start hunting down another copy. Worse come to worse, I can simply wait until my equipment gets here from Japan, and I'll just get back on my computer (which has a better version of the game anyways). From what the shipping companies said, the shipment should already be here now, just has to clear customs, which could take a week.
