I have been playing ffxi on a Windows Vista while connected to Roadrunner directly through a Modem, but recently we upgraded to wifi so the computer upstairs could use the internet too. Ever since the "upgrade" i have been randomly disconnected every hour or so while playing. I hooked it back up to the way it was to find that it worded perfectly again. However we need the wifi hooked up to use the internet in the computer upstairs. Any suggestions on what i should do?

Re: Random Disconnections DX
If there is a connection loss in the wireless long enough that a "No Route To Host" error gets sent to the client, the client->SE connection will be killed and you will get a disconnect after a minute or so. As far as I know, the only real solution is to not use wireless.
If you can run a ping to your cable modem in a window, you can see when this happens and confirm it.Elwynn @ Fairy Elwynbelwyn @ Sylph | PS2 PC

Re: Random Disconnections DX
Is your computer connected by network cable to a physical port on the router, or are you using a wireless card to connect?Kumei, pickpocket of Midgardsormr(Bastok Rank 10)

Re: Random Disconnections DX
coaxial.
Anyway, a direct connection means we can rule out reception failure issues. The five things that come to mind to look into:
1) Are both ethernet cables known-good? This may be less than trivial to check without an auto-sensing feature on the modem, since the computer<->router cable should be a direct patch (non-crossover) while the router<->modem (or computer<->modem) cable should be crossover, but if you can reproduce the problem after replacing the computer<->router cable with another one, it's not likely to be a cabling issue.
2) The router may have incorrect firewall/NAT settings. You might check if anyone has recommendations for port forwarding and the like.
3) It's conceivable that there's some sort of feature set up that automatically kills long-held connections to 'save resources'. Computer labs like this sort of thing. Check your router settings.
4) There may be some sort of DHCP-related problem between the router and the ISP. Take a look at your Internet IP address, for instance at a site like Irongeek's Browser Information Page which feeds back to you info submitted in your request. After you get disconnected, reload the page and see if your address has changed. If so, your router may be mishandling the DHCP negotiation in some way.
5) The router may be suffering from an intermittent failure internally. This would be the most difficult to verify, but if you can reproduce this problem with other long-held connections and the above options don't pan out, it's worth considering. In such a case you would need to replace the router.Kumei, pickpocket of Midgardsormr(Bastok Rank 10)

Re: Random Disconnections DX
Well when i take the router out of the equation it works perfectly so i dont think it would be the wiring. Firewall is also excluded i believe considering how it did not interfere with my connection w/o the router. 3. How could i go about checking if that feature is on? Would i look in my programs and see if my router is sett to auto disconnect after a while or something? I will double check the IP address. And the router is brand new so i have my doubts that there is an internal malfunction but i will not rule that out.sigpic
