  • Can't set overlay graphics resolution

I just had to reinstall everything after reformatting my hard drive, I've had the game for several years on the same machine, so I know it's not a hardware problem, but after getting everything installed I went into FFXI Config and cannot set my overlay graphics to anything but 640x480. I have DirectX9.0c installed, and the latest drivers for my Intel 865 chipset. The chipset has never given me a problem in the past.. I've always ran the game at 1024x768 overlay and the same background resolution. Can anyone point out what I'm missing here? I really don't want to play with 640x480 overlay lol. I'll double check my Intel drivers, but I know they are up to date, and I'm just not sure what else could be causing the problem.

Have you tried manually editing the registry entries? If not, I would give that a shot. Here's a link to what the different registry values pertain to, and common settings for them (overlay is values 0001 and 0002).

By the way, directly editing the registry is far more powerful than using the FFXI Config tool. It opens up the ability to tweak the graphics settings outside of the standard FFXI values, which is nice, especially as concerns the background resolution...if your computer can handle it, think about adjusting that up (as well as your overlay) and see how the game runs. Just be sure to either back up your registry first (as noted on the page I gave you), or at least make a note of what the values are before you make any changes so you can manually revert them later if it's too much for your video card to handle.

Can you set your desktop resolution to the usual resolutions? If so, I'd say you hit some kind of odd glitch in the config program, and setting the resolution in the registry should be the best bet. If you can't, something's wrong with either your monitor or its connection to the computer, or with your video drivers.

Or the user he's running it as doesn't have permissions to alter that registry key.

Re: Can't set overlay graphics resolution

Hey thanks for the help, editing the registry worked fine, dunno what went wrong with the FFXI config program, I've reinstalled everything a couple times in he past and never had that problem come up. I'd like to mess with the background res but my comp sucks, and I don't wanna risk breaking anything. My video chip won't let me set to anything better than 1024x768, so I guess I'm stuck with that.

Honestly, unless your computer is a real dinosaur, you can probably still bump up the background resolution some and see some pretty good results. Since you're overlay is set to 1024x768, why don't you try setting the Background res (values 0003 and 0004) to the same thing? Worst case scenario is the game will be a little too jerky, and if so, just go back in to the registry and put them where they were before. It won't break anything, and if it does run ok you'll be amazed at the difference in how the game looks (I sure was ^^)

If you'd rather not, that's cool, but it really isn't something that you need to worry too much about...pretty much anyone that plays on the PC has done this themselves because, to be honest, the game looks like ass without it...
