  • Installation issues- can't find any solution

I'm experiencing numerous issues while trying to install my Vana'diel Collection 2008. For starters, when I insert the disc, it simply says that Autorun has encountered a problem and must close. When I try to install PlayOnline individually I get an error that says, "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with the package. The error code is 2715." When I try to install the individual discs I get an error message akin to, "1628: Failed to complete installation."

The install worked flawlessly on the laptop that is about 8 years old, and 4 years older than this computer I'm using. I was previously able to install on this computer no problem, but that was over a year ago. I have done at least two reformats since then, so there is no trace of the game left. I am currently attempting to download a torrent, but I would really prefer not to wait an eternity for it to download (I use DSL.) No firewalls are turned on, no anti-virus software, nothing that would stand in the way of it being installed. Other games install fine.

I'm really desperate here, hoping someone can help. I'm running on Windows XP, not Vista. My video card is up to date, as is my DirectX. There is plenty of hd space available on my computer as well. Let me know if I may provide any additional information that could assist in fixing this problem.

    Maybe a flaky CD drive?

Distinct possibility. See if you can copy the disc to your hard drive and install from there.

Beyond that, scan your system for any viruses/malware/etc. If all else fails, you might have to reinstall Windows.

edit: If you can successfully copy the disc contents to the hard drive, but still can't install, see if you can install the Vista-ready download of POL from http://dl.square-enix.co.jp/polus/setup.exe
This will help narrow down whether we're talking about a problem with the installers on your media, or with POL/FFXI installers more generally.

Installing the Vista-ready version worked perfectly. I was able to copy all the files over, but not able to directly install them. When I attempt to install the first disk, it will start up and do some little loading process before I get a message saying, "1670: Unable to load module C:\Program Files\A08001W_001_D01 (E)\INST1\ISSetup.dll Error Code: 998" If I try and install any of the other disks, an error pops up immediately that simply says, "Setup Launcher has encountered a problem and needs to close." What steps should I take from here? And thank you very much for helping me, this has been really irking me since yesterday.

Edit: Can't believe I forgot to state this. It's a DVD-rom, if that makes any difference.

Edit 2: New advancement. I can now get to the splash screen asking which of the items I want to install, but when I click on one, it closes and reopens the exact same splash screen.
