Using 'windowed' setting causes game to crash. Why?

I play FFXI using the Windowed setting, but when I actually take advantage of this setting, it causes the game to quit responding. I end up having to Ctrl-Alt-Delete out and log back in.

This is happens when I get a pop up, minimize the game or hit the windows start button. Basically, when I do anything out side of the game.

It used to work beautifully, but for some reason it's stopped. Has anyone else had this problem? Any advice for me?

try and remember the last thing you did, before this started happening

updated a driver
changed a hardware item
something?
