Very low FPS on FFXI

So I am running FFXI on my new Vista 64bit computer.

Quick Specs:
q6600 Quad Core CPU
4gb memory
nvidia 8600 gts gpu

So I am a problem with very low FPS at times, dipping down to 5-6 FPS. The only time it really does this is when there are more than 10 people (players) in my line of sight and in Windurst, Kazham and Whitegate.

I dont think my computer is the issue, and my connection is fine. I updated all the necessary gfx card and Vista drivers but the problem still continues. Do you think its mainly Vistas problem?

I read somewhere that Vista doesn't like anything below DX9, and FFXI is DX8.1, so is this the problem?

I read on these boards however that many people running Vista 64 bit with FFXI is fine...any help is appreciated.

its your graphics card, FFXI has problems with your series of card

I have the same quad and ram in my system but have a ATI Radeon 3850 1gb card, and I get 29.4 FPS in all areas but Whitegate and Jeuno and a few other zones, and of course low frame rate in besieged and campaign, get about 18-15 there.

All I can really say is make sure your drivers are up to date, or get another video card.

Use drivers 169.17 or higher.

I'm having the same problem. But i'm running a 9800M GT card. anyone know how to fix this problem or if there is another known problem with the ASUS G50?
