  • PAL PS3 Moan

    Hi there,

This is just a moan here, but I am lucky to have a 60GB PS3. I have had this since the date of release in the UK.

I have been running FFXI on PC for about 4 years. I imported the US version for PC. But I would like to use my PS3 for running they game.

I am very fustrated with the fact that SE have not released a PAL verson of the FFXI, otherwise I could install the game onto my ps3.

I know that other region PS3's can install and play the game. Why doesnt SE have the idea to just produce a version for PAL region. Like the Collectors 2008. I would be a ps2 game, but only the front they state, only for use with 60GB PS3, and finaly being able to play it on ps3 would be a god send.

Even if, Sony do an update to allow FFXI from orther regions to run, I mean all it would take is for them to specify the DVD code SUS-xxxxx thingy to be allowed to play.

I am interested to know how many other people are in the same boat, or if anyone has had any sucess installing FFXI US or JAP on PAL 60GB PS3.

    Thank you for your time.

    Re: PAL PS3 Moan

You're an EU gamer! Bend over and take it like one!

In all seriousness though, yeah it sucks. But I very much doubt you'll get what you want. I don't know how much effort is involved in an NTSC -> PAL conversion for a 60Hz game like FFXI. Might be minimal, might be lengthy.

Fact is though, you're lucky to have a 60GB version. As I'm sure you're aware, Sony have discontinued this version. The only PS3 currently in production in PAL territories is the 40GB version. That is to say: the one with no PS2 backwards-compatibilty. Sony have made no official mention that PAL territories will ever get anything other than the 40GB up.

To clarify then: there is no PS2 backwards compatibilty in PAL territories (unless you were lucky enough to pick up the 60GB).

So, you can see why it would be unlikely for SE to release a brand new PS2 PAL version of FFXI for use on the PS3 right...?

And as for playing an NTSC version of FFXI on your PAL PS3. Not possible sadly.

PS3 games are region-free. PS2 games, however, are not.

As an aside, I read yesterday that the global Metal Gear Online Beta servers suffered some issues. Konami's solution? Discontinue the support for EU players and make it a JP/NA-only beta of course!

    YayEU!

EDIT: Hm, one option you might consider is eBaying your PAL console (plenty of demand out there) and then actually importing an NA 80GB version and an NTSC copy of FFXI for PS2. Prices state-side are so damn cheap compared to ours that you'd probably buy the 80 for about as much as you could sell your 60. Playing PS3 games on the console isn't an issue (region-free). But you would lose back-compat for the rest of your PAL PS2 games.. Only other issue would be in obtaining a power supply, but I've read that the PS3 (both regions) uses a standard power input-socket and that a regular UK 'kettle lead' with a 3-pin plug would work fine. Don't quote me on that, but that's what I've been told.

    Might be worth considering?

I have thought of the 80GB NA version, but the import TAX would be huge.

In regards to the current problem of existing PS2 game, I still own a PS2. So thats not an issue.

I would have to give it some thought, but I think going to that lengths would be a bit extreme to just play FFXI

Is it true about MGO for EU, it took me 3 days to finally get my MGO ID, and now there is the poss that I cant use it?

Would explain the connection to server problems I am having trying to log in.

But why does EU get shafted?

      (retorical question)

        Agreed.

I don't know if it's practical, or what your specific reasons for wanting a console version of FFXI are, but have you thought about picking up a 360? No need for a Gold membership and you get to play Lost Odyssey too, among others.

          Re: PAL PS3 Moan

I have had the ps3 for over a year, and about 6 months ago I did have an xbox 360 for a while, after using the 360, I relised how much of a sony whore I was.

I didnt get on with the console (was preium version), and in the sort time I had it, there was p[roblems with the console. I dont like the 360 for the poor build quaility.

And yes, I was just looking into it, and the EU MGO beta has been suspended, until a time that they see fit.

            Re: PAL PS3 Moan

Fair enough. The console has certainly earnt its unreliable rep. Myself, I've been one of the people who has never suffered any issues with the 360. And I've put it through its paces (it was on non-stop, disc spinning, for 4 days whilst I bazaared a mannequin body).

Getting back to the PAL FFXI thing, like I said, as it stands currently there is simply no back-compat in the PAL regions so it's never going to happen. It's reasonable to assume that Sony will - at some point - tell us that they intend to release an 80GB version over here at some point in the future (especially as those mandatory prep-installs start to rack up on the 40's hard-drive), but I see it happening way down the line.

Sony seem to be struggling still. They've just stated that the beta for Home (initially pencilled for release.. Autumn 2007?) has now been delayed again, now looking to go up Autumn 2008, with 2009 as the Final Version's planned release.

If Sony ever do allow PAL an 80GB version (or any PS2 back-compat version), I still doubt very much that SE would consider a PAL version of FFXI. I just don't see the market numbers being there.

I certainly intend to pick up a PS3. When though.... I have no idea. There's nothing, nothing at all currently on the console that I care enough about. Certain big exclusives will no doubt sway my hand towards my pocket, but I'm still wary of how unstable things seem to be as well as the overall drought of interesting, JP-centric games that I tend to think of when I consider a Sony console.

            Hm, I'm just waffling now..

            Sorry^^
