  • FFXI on Mac?

    ok I know I have been posting a lot of threads lately I am sorry I have a lot of questions. Any who, I am going to buy a Mac when I get enough money to afford one, and I was wandering does FFXI come in Mac software? Or do I have to download some PC + Mac combo drive or something?

    There is not a mac client for FFXI. But if you run boot camp and get a copy of Windows, you can run FFXI just fine.

      I had heard lately that in some ways it's actually cheaper to buy a Mac and install Windows in boot camp than it is to just buy a PC. Might be worth looking into

          I'm not really the best person to explain. I am not a tech guru. But basically you buy a copy of windows, install it on your mac, and then you can boot the mac in windows rather than OS X, and run FFXI that way. You can't run it in OS X. Macs can run windows really well, but there is the additional cost of buying that copy of windows (which isn't cheap). Still, if you're really interested in playing FFXI on your Mac, it's the only way.

            I think I might just keep my PC to play FFXI, but use my Mac for internet, homework, music, etc...(everything I usely do on my PC accept play FFXI.)

              That works well too. I used to have an old iMac I used for internet stuffs while I was playing fullscreen on my PC.

                If you change your mind, boot camp works pretty nicely. I had a generic XP Pro installation left over from my previous laptop [that destroyed itself] that I put on my Macbook Pro.

                Windows XP got a tiny partition, and I installed FFXI to a removable USB drive. The only time Windows gets to connect to the internet is when it updates itself or I fire up FFXI.

                  Heck I see it as this anyway.....

                  Mac = graphic and music editing
                  Win= gaming
                  Linux = programing

                  I would never use Linux or Mac for gaming, but thats just me ;p

                          That's not really true. And it doesn't really matter, because what we're talking about here is running FFXI on a Windows boot on a mac. So you're not playing it in OSX anyway.

                            what I was getting at, is why buy a mac, to just put windows on it anyway? kind of silly

                              Because it can run windows better than a PC, and because then you can use OS X for the things that you don't need windows for, since OS X is pretty awesome. But you also have Windows available for those stubborn programs that won't play well with OS X all on one machine. It's pretty elementary, really.
