Help with Intel X3100 (GM965 chipset)

Hello,

I'm new here and have a problem getting my new notebook to play FFXI. A similar thread in this forum is at http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/gam...-campaign.html but mine is different, let me explain more.

First, the system spec:

Dell Inspiron 1525 SE
Intel Core2 Duo T5550 (2xCPU @1.83GHz with 2M of L2 cache)
3GB of RAM
250GB HDD (about ~200GB free)
Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset (GM965)

OS: Vista Home Premium SP1 (32bits)
Display Driver: Intel Driver 7.14.10.1437 (Date: 2/11/2008) - this is the same as their latest 15.8.0.x from Intel website (also latest from Open Drivers -- One-stop Driver Download Service)

FFXI Config Settings:
- Screen Size: 800x600 in Windowed Mode (FFXI official) - I've tried going down to 640x480 and up to 1280x800 (native resolution) and the same result.
- Background Resolution - 256x256 (tried going all the way up to 1024x1024).

Within the game itself, I have disabled/turned off all effects, shadows, character models, etc and still all my NPC and PC looks to be like the two attached pictures.

I normally plays on the xbox and also have a working desktop (uses ATI x1650 Pro with 512M of RAM also on Vista Home Premium) but really need to get the notebook to play so I can take it with me on the road.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've never seen an error like that on FFXI it's possible either your game files got corrupted while you were installing or your software drivers for your video card are not up to date. That's about all I can think of on the fly for ya.

I did run into an interesting error with Vista the other night, if you have the game in windowed mode and pull up the task manager (ctrl+alt+del) it will inform you of a "Color depth error" and either exit you from the game or make the program run slightly off until it is restarted.

Did this happen at any other times on your machine or just when you are in that area?

No this is a fresh new install + updates to the most recent update from POL. The driver is what came with the machine but I've also check Intel's own site and is the latest released driver available for any GM965 chipset.

It happens in all char (main + mules) and also at the character selection screen. Same thing whether I'm in windowed mode or in full screen mode.

I've also tried all the different settings for 'Textures' in FFXI Config and none seems to make any difference.

Type of Chip = UnKnown Video Chip
Video Driver = igdumd32.dll

Selphiie is running the same onboard graphics that Dreamin has loaded in his system and she has only had the one (albiet odd heating) issues for her laptop during campaigns. The only difference I've noticed in the specs is Selphiie may have updated her system using NVIDIA drivers for the chipset, there might be one that will work with the 945GM Express or at least fool it into using the correct settings.

Thanks for the link. Although not directly linked to the correct driver in that post (I will update that post shortly). The driver that seems to work is no longer available from Intel directly but is still available from opendrivers here: Download Intel G965/Q965/Q963 Graphics Media Accelerator Driver 15.2.1.1227 Windows Vista x32

At least so far the character models are being rendered. Now the next test would be to see how it behave in a regular xp party as well as in events.

Some non-partying and non-event FPS testing (using Fraps to count FPS) shows that with all default settings and windowed mode @ 1024x768 (this is with Shadows and Environment Effect on), on a mule in Jeuno I'm getting anywhere from 15 to 29 fps.

Trying to get into Besieged but doesn't seen to be any going on since Campaign came out. I'll try Campaign this weekend on my main character and will let ppl know what FPS I'm able to get (going for Jugner to see if I'll lag crash or not).

Though many people did have the same shimmering odd polygons as characters, summons, mobs and chests, their solutions didnt work for my intel chipset GM965 graphics accelerator for the Inspiron 1523, vista 32 bit version.


I solved this annoying issue by going to the Dell support site, logging in my pc tab, clicking VIDEO drivers, found one that was recommended which DIDN'T work, and clicked OTHER VERSIONS and found an earlier version that worked.

UPDATE: Finaly got it to work by downgrading the driver from 7.14.10.109 (dated Jan 2nd 2008) to 7.14.10.1253 (dated April 13th 2007) file link is: Intel GM965 Express Chipset Family,

Basically it recommended i download a dif driver that didnt work, so I clicked option on that driver of OTHER VERSION, thats the one which worked.
