  • Connection Drop-off?

The Final Fantasy XI server seems to die on me every night at around 8pm to about 10pm. It happens every night, in fact, it's been costing me, I was fighting a simple Hornet tonight and I die cause I didn't hit it and it kept hitting me over and over again. Is there maybe something with my computer's wireless connection or is it the server itself that is messing up around that time? I can give more information on the computer and stuff if it's my computer.

have you tried not using wireless and go directly (via ethernet cable) to the router/modem?

    Thanks Yyg!

Not yet, it's hard for me to do that... I have to pull the wire out of my sister's room and hook it up to my room, it can be done for my computer. Just not very easy.

well, it's the most sure fire way of telling whether it is your wireless that's causing the problem or not... because the servers are definitely up during those times

Well, I did that tonight and I thought it was... because for a while it was working fine, then it happened again. It dropped me off the connection. I don't really get why it's doing it, I have a high speed cable modem hooked up to the connection.

does all of your internet die during those times or just ffxi? since you seem to share the internet service, is someone else in the house doing something during those times that will knock you off from ffxi (ie massive bittorrent)?

            Thanks Yyg!

I find that my connection issues are usually of the "massive bittorrent" variety (I wonder why I'm lagging out then see my bro's computer using 2 MB/sec of our 5 total downloading videos and other crap). In my house, we have 2 desktops connected wirelessly, 2 desktops hard wired, and a Wii and Xbox 360 connected at times, so I find myself making a round before playing shutting things off, which is something you should definitely check on.

Also, check your computer to see whats running in the background. At times, Norton Internet Security will kick me off when it tries to run liveupdate while I'm playing ffxi, and from what I hear, those "constantly updating" av programs like Kaspersky can really kill bandwidth. Since so many different software/hardware types have "auto-update" features, something could be set up to try and download updates and such at the specific times you mentioned. I found that by going through my startup config and deleting a lot of unnecessary programs I did much better with my d/c-ing.
I'm a slow motion accident, lost in coffee rings and fingerprints...
