  • Updating on Vista is Insanely Slow

I'm over at another house this weekend and I thought I would install FFXI on the PC here so I could play a little. Unfortunatly, it uses Vista.

I got PlayOnline to install fine with the Vista version from SE's site, but it runs sluggishly. It takes minutes just check the version and then it takes alot of time and luck to get the program to recognize that I'm clicking the next button. When I finally do get to the updating process.. It's so incredibly slow that I just wanna cry. And that's just on the checking files stage. lol

I let it sit for 2 hours and came back and it was only 45% done... and that was just file checking.. There's no downloading involved. I cringe to think of how long it will take to update the actually FFXI client, since it has like 6 or 7 times more files to "check." I'm pretty sure this system is faster than my own, and it took me less than 15 minutes to update PlayOnline. So that leads me to believe that it's something to do with Vista.

My question is: Is there anything I can do to speed up the file checking process or make it run less sluggishly?

its the PC they have... not Vista, I dont have that problem.....

all this Vista bashing lately, please unless you understand the OS, dont crap about it.....

You need to think about their system specs, Dell for one, if the system meats the minimum requirements for Vista, they will slap it on there -.-

and a PC with 512 or even 1GB of ram will run a tad sluggish with Vista.

The system is perfectly fine. The specs are better than my own. I mentioned that. So yes, it's something to do with Vista.

They have 2 gigs of RAM. I'm afraid I will bash Vista. That statement up there is one reason why, too.

Their HDD most likely sucks and/or is highly fragmented.

I'm pretty sure this system is faster than my own
So what you're saying is you don't have a clue what they have.

Vista runs just fine as long as (and this is the same caveat for every system) a retard doesn't manage it.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

Then they have the system bogged down with something or its the internet or even the CPU, or I forgot about this, but it could have part to do with their Videocard, since Vista is fully rendered by the video now. Like I said, I have Vista and these specs, and dont have a single problem.

these three things will help some, but if the system barly meets the requirements for VIsta (like most Dell systems that come with it) its going to run abit sluggish.
