Is this possible? As far as I can tell, my HDD problem is a direct result of POL being screwed up, or my computer being screwed up. Is there a way to reinstall POL without having to mess with my FFXI files?

Yeah, POL is installed seperately. It's not even on the same disc as the FFXI files iirc.

woh woh hold on......
first what kind of HDD error are you getting, and is it just with FFXI?
Some HDD errors can be generated by the OS or the program, so dont toss the towel in on your PC just yet.-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first time I turn on my computer, I recive PoL Error 1155 saying an unexpected problem occured. Subsequent times I try t update, it says PoL Error 1153 and that there was a problem detected with the HDD.Originally posted by EllipsesReally, it's just like pretty much every question about this game that begins with "Why." mmmmm......
well before you get a new HDD, format and reinstall Windows, and then install just POL and try updating it, if you still get HDD errors then get yourself a new hard drive.-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Re-Installing POL without re-installing FFXI?
First thing to do is to open up My Computer (in WinXP's default theme, this is under the Start Menu. In the classic theme, it's on the desktop). Right-click on your hard drive's icon and select Properties. Go to the Tools tab and select Check Now. Check both boxes and click Start. An error box will pop up; click yes. Reboot the computer. When booting up, the filesystem will be checked for errors. Since this does not save a log, you will want to watch to see if there are errors. If errors are detected, the system will attempt to fix them. If errors are fixed but you continue to have problems, your HDD may be failing and you may need to buy a new one and reinstall Windows, but you probably don't need to replace any other parts.
If there are no filesystem errors detected, the problem is probably not the HDD. Next thing to try is to download a Memory Tester program and make sure the system's onboard memory is okay. If both HDD and Memory check out, an OS reinstall without replacing any hardware may help, but it would help if we knew of any other symptoms you may be experiencing.
Also, you should probably run a scan for viruses/spyware/etc. in case this is what's interfering. You may want to visit Trend Micro's Housecall and install an Anti-Virus program if you don't already have one.Kumei, pickpocket of Midgardsormr(Bastok Rank 10)

Re: Re-Installing POL without re-installing FFXI?
If you don't need a HDD that big, I'd say just see what deals you can find at a local computer/electronics store such as Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples, Fry's, etc. I managed to get a Western Digital 160GB for $60 recently. $100 isn't bad for 500 GB, though.
Brand-wise, I can't say anything one way or the other about Hitachi. I personally have had good experiences with Western Digital drives (these are pretty durable, I carried one of these around in a removable drive cage in my backpack for two years, then continued using it in a desktop for more than 4 years afterward, retiring it only after having gotten bigger drives for both main computers (it was only 10GB)). I have had generally bad experiences with Maxtor and Seagate IDE drives, so I try to avoid them. I don't know whether their SATA drives are better or not.
(Edit: To be fair, while Seagate IDE drives have or at least had a widespread bad reputation, Maxtor is actually seen as one of the better brands. I've had only one Western Digital drive fail on me, though (and it came in a Dell), and I've had a few Maxtor drives fail (though one of them did come in a Packard Bell, so...) That said, Seagate bought out Maxtor. I don't know where their quality level is now and I probably won't bother to find out.)Kumei, pickpocket of Midgardsormr(Bastok Rank 10)

Re: Re-Installing POL without re-installing FFXI?
Seagate does have a reputation for making good SCSI drives, I have no idea where they are with SATA. It was IDE drives you wanted to stay away from, and that was common wisdom circa 1995, so things may have changed.Kumei, pickpocket of Midgardsormr(Bastok Rank 10)
