Problems at CHARACTER SELECTION SCREEN

I'm really sorry if this problem has been posted somewhere on this forum, but I've literally searched for hours and can't find anything.

I installed FFXI, Playonline, updated the DirectX driver and my graphics card driver, but FFXI crashes to the desktop once I enter the 'Character Selection' screen.

I was on FFXI about a year ago, and had the same problem then on first install. The following error window comes up:

Does anyone know why this is happening? or what I can do?

Try going into FFXI Config and checking "simplified character creation visuals" under the Misc. tab. I don't remember if I ever got error messages, but my old computer used to do something similar before I turned off the romping races.
