Game won't load

I got finished updating and stuff, and when I click play, the game seems to start to load, and then it goes to a fullscreen black screen, closes, and then it returns me to the POL thing and it says "Checking messages..." and stuff, and then it just returns me to the FFXI screen where it has all the options.

Why won't the game load?

It sounds like you're losing focus on FFXI, is anything running in the background?

The only thing running in the background is Norton Protection Center. I also think it may be my account on XP, for a while I've been unable to run anything and then it runs fine on my dads account.

Is your windows XP account an administrator or a limited user? Could be access issues.

Could be programs running in the background making it lose focus.

Could be your computer doesn't meet the hardware requirements.


Go through that list and come back.

2. I've tried closing every background program and it still crashes.

3. My computer meets the requirements, I know.

Have you tried installing/updating DirectX and your graphics driver? And remember that just because another game works doesn't mean DX and drivers are up to date.

Yeah, I've updated that. Still no go.

I just called SE and asked, and I was suggested to

1. Turn off anti-virus program and things: DIDN'T WORK
2. Close any other background programs: DIDN'T WORK
3. Disable startup programs: I'm about to try this.

EDIT: And numba 3 didn't work either.

Hm..which screen are you clicking "Play" on?

It should be Open POL >> Click on FFXI >> I think it's select "agree" next >> Then Play and it gives a warning to not forget...something.

If you're getting to that last step, have you purchased a content ID yet? I seem to remember something silimair to that when I made my Mule account. But I thought it told me something to that effect.

I dont know if it's relevant but I had one of them nasty pop up adverts stuck in my computer, each time I played FFXI if the "virus protection" advert popped up it would drag my ass from the game back to the desktop.

leaving me open mouthed thinking wtf......

I also had adware thingy's once and they slowed the game too!

Nowadays I make sure my computer is all squeaky clean

At this point I've called SE twice with no fucking answers.

I'm just reinstalling now.

The only time I had that problem it was to do with my Graphics card but if you've double-checked everything with your card I have no clue really what it could be. If it still doesn't work when you reinstall it maybe restore your system to a previous date when the game worked? That way if some program has installed itself that is interfering with it running it won't be there anymore?

Got a new graphics card >_> I'm not great with computers so I just took the easy way out and instead of fixing it just replaced it with something new and improved
