  • Access Problems

Alright, I was hoping to be able to jump into this without having to ask any questions, but it looks like I'll have to. I have installed the game, but when I click on PlayOnline Viewer I get this message:

    Error code = 20008003
PlayOnline Viewer cannot run under current operating system.

I don't know exactly what the problem is since they don't say specifically. Any idea what I'm supposed to do? I can try to give more information if needed.

Did you install POL from the CD's (DVD) on Vista?
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

      Re: Access Problems

First, do I have to install both discs first? Because I just did the first one. (I have the 2007 Collection edition.)

      But yeah, I'm using Vista.

You need to POL client that's specifically for Vista. You should be able to find it at their official website.

          Re: Access Problems

Alright, now I was able to get to PlayOline Viewer, but then I ran into a new issue.

          Error code: POL-1160
Network is busy or there are connection problems. Please try again later or verify that the cables, networking devices, and network settings are properly configured.

(Note that I haven't made any changes to the Network Settings on PlayOnline Viewer.)

            Re: Access Problems

Do I need to enable the UPnP Portmap Settings? What about the connection check? For that is says disabled is recommended. Then there's the Proxy server, but I don't know what to do with that.

              Re: Access Problems

... I'm just going to assume I need to do something with the the Network Settings..proxy server. Since I still get the same error message when changing only the first two options.. Is there by any chance someone here who could give a detailed explanation about how to find the needed information using Windows Vista, or finding out if this computer even has an assigned proxy server address?

                Proxy?

                (threads merged)

Hello. I'm currently trying to set up FFXI. I have it installed, but I can't begin registration yet because my network settings are not properly configured (at least, I'm assuming that's what the problem is). When I go to the network settings on PlayOnline Viewer, it gives me the option to use my proxy server address and other related information. However, I do not know how to access this information on my computer. Can anyone give a detailed explanation for finding the needed information, or seeing if my computer even has an assigned proxy server address? Thanks in advance.

                  Re: Proxy?

Generally speaking, if you don't know if you have a proxy (and, by extension, the settings for the proxy), then you don't have one and it's another problem.

However, you can still lookup your current proxy settings (if any) by going to Start > Control Panel > Internet Settings > Connections > LAN Settings (if you are using Internet Explorer) or Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Settings (if you are using Firefox).

                    Re: Proxy?

Hm, well I was able to follow that somewhat close, and it didn't look like there were any available proxy addresses to pick, so I'm guessing this computer doesn't have that.

So, next question. How do I get a proxy address set up?

                      Re: Proxy?

For the most part, if you are setting up a home internet connection, you don't need a proxy. I highly doubt proxy settings are your problem here.

Let's start with you giving us some info on your internet connection (type, ISP, etc). Also, make sure if you have a firewall you have it configured to allow FFXI to access your computer. Finally, if you have a broadband connection and/or use a router, make sure the required ports are opened.

                        Re: Proxy?

Well the error message I've been getting is this:

                        Error code: POL-1160
Network is busy or there are connection problems. Please try again later or verify that the cables, networking devices, and network settings are properly configured.

I doubt the problem is the connection. 1/100 times this computer has any issues with that. Currently for signal strength it says: Excellent. But it could be an issue with the firewall, maybe. This computer does have pretty high security. Although I'm not sure how to find out about detailed firewall information.

                          Re: Proxy?

This is getting very frustrating. I've been working on this all day and I haven't made ANY progress at all over the past four hours.

                            Re: Proxy?

                            According to http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/env...tml?pageID=win

PlayOnline (and it's affiliated programs, ie FFXI and TetraMaster) can use:
                            -TCP 25, 80, 110, 443 or 50000 - 65535
                            -UDP 50000 - 65535

While not absolutely recommended as there are way too many open ports, if your router does not support uPnP (Universal Plug 'n Play) you may want to open those ports. If your router does support uPnP, then it's really not necessary to open them, though they may help.

Of course, all this relies on my understanding of uPnP to be correct... which, given my past experience, isn't very likely.

I wouldn't know how to do that.. The worst part is I don't even know WHAT the problem is. And even less about how to fix it. I've been talking to other people too and none of them know what to do either. Why does this have to be so difficult? -_-
