Game won't start - Clueless

After taking a 2-year long break from FFXI i decide to start playing again,
on a different computer of course. I install FFXI, CoP and RotZ, it starts updating PoL and i re-activate my character.

So i press the 'play' button to download the patches and... Nothing happens. After a while POL closes, and that's it.
I only get as far as the 'don't forget your friends and school etc. etc.' warning.

My specs are:

Intel(r) Pentium 4 3,6 GHZ
2048MB Ram
Sapphire RADEON x1600 Pro
directx 9.0c
Microsoft XP Home edition (5.1, build 2600)

Any help would be greatly apretiated.

could possibly be something else you have running in the background? check your cpu usage. maybe its video card drivers, im not familiar with ati's cats enough to know if any have compatibility problems with ffxi, like some of the newer nvidia drivers do. might also try pcpitstop and run a free system check might be a problem with cache size or packet size might be causing a problem. something else to consider is hard drive space this game with expasion takes up alot of a smaller drive make sure you have plenty of room.

I ran the pcpitstop thing and it told me to clean up some junk files, i even defragged my C drive but still the same problem. So it's probably my graphics driver, how do i solve the compatability problem?

so you have the radeon, but did you install Direct X (should already be installed, but wouldn't hurt to refresh to DX9c) and the Catalyst drivers?

I downloaded the newest catalyst drivers yesterday, and i've had Directx 9.0c for a while now, i can run all my other games with no problem exept FFXI. it won't even let me update the game.
