  • BSOD/Hang

    Hi all,

I've been playing in Kazham, and FFXI is either BSOD'ing (JP version) or hanging (EN version) every time I walk around in the city. I'm wondering if it is the temperature of my CPU (62 @ idle). When I run CPU test programs, such as Hot CPU Tester, the CPU heats up (to about 68), then throttles down to 14x, and sticks there until the test is over....

My computer config is below. I'll also mention that I'm running XI at 1680x1050, rendering 1680x1680. Since I'm using a 7600GT, I don't think the display settings are really the problem...

Finally, if heat is the problem, is there anything I can do to reduce the temp on my 805D, or should I get a new proc, and can anyone suggest a CPU that runs cool?

    Edit: MB is ASUS P5ND2-SLI
Edit: Was able to turn off throttling in my BIOS, but I'm concerned that my proc will go over 75 degs. Wonder if my heatsink is not soundly installed, or if 805D's just run hot by nature...?

    Here's my config:

    Re: BSOD/Hang

From what I know, BSOD is usually software issues, not power/heating. Power/heating usually causes the system to spontaniously reboot.

It's probably a driver or .dat issue. Can you get a friend to move you out of Kazham? You could be missing/have a corrupted .dat. Awhile ago, SE made it so missing .dats would crash FFXI, because it caused a lot of cheating at places like Aery. I don't think it would make your PC BSOD, but it's possible.

      Re: BSOD/Hang

Actually, I don't think the heat was causing the crash directly. It was causing my MB to drop the multiplier to 14x from 20x, and ramp up the FSB. Interestingly, when I disabled the throttle function, the problem went away. Though, I've been logging temps, and I'm running at almost a constant 70C, with spikes up to 76C ><

I may go pick up a 65nm P4 or something just to see if I can reduce my power consumption...

        Re: BSOD/Hang

A blue screen will tell you what driver or .sys file caused the error. Write it down next time and then come back and say what it was. nv4xxxx.dll is often the problem for instance.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

HTTP Error 418 - I'm A Teapot - The resulting entity body MAY be short and stout.

If you're running hot so often, have you tried reseating the heat sink? New thermal compound might help.
