I've continuously put off playing FFXI, but I really want to get back into the game. Unfortunately, 90% of the time, I put it off because I convince myself what a hassle it is to start the game on the PS2.
First I have to attach the HDD to the system, then plug in the Logitech Keyboard Controller. Then I have to remove my ethernet bridge from my PS3 and plug it to the PS2 (and then back again when using the PS3). Then there's the extra loading for the PS2 when the HDD is attached. After that, it's a long wait for PO to boot up, logging me in, and then further waiting when I log into FFXI.
The whole process takes a good 10 minutes, so that's why I keep putting off the game. But then I considered trying the PC version. It's dirt cheap right now ($15 gets you the game and all the expansion packs), I have a capable graphics card, and I can plug my PC to my 1080p LCD. So in theory, I could be getting a quicker and prettier experience rather than using my PS2.
I still have a few questions regarding the transition to PC before I decide, though.
1. Will the Logitech Keyboard controller work with the PC version (if I'm using a PS2/USB adaptor for the controller portion)? If so, do all the buttons work the same (or can I configure them)?
2. How is the loading/connecting/lagging compared to the PS2? Can I log in much quicker?
3. The custom resolution I use for my TV when plugging the PC to it is 1808x1012. Does FFXI let you customize resolutions? If that size makes the text too tiny, what's a recommended resolution?
4. How would the game run on my PC? My specs are:
Intel(R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
2.79GHz, 1.25gb of RAM
Graphics Card: Radeon 9600 Series
Sound Card: Soundmax Integrated Audio (included with PC)
5. Any other advantages/disadvantages to playing on PC vs PS2?
I appreciate the help.
