Is a Playstation Two 'adjustments?'

This ~might~ be a short lived thread. But, I just thought I'd ask..

I know of people who have added a chip to their XBox, for instance, but is there any such thing for the PS2? Maybe a way to enhance memory, graphics, network connection, or the like?

With a few quick searches, I didn't find anything 'here' or on the internet. However, the network where I am at gave me a 'Access denied..' message from the internet search.

An ok substitute subject for this thread - if there is a lack of info (or none?) for some way to increase the PS2's performance (for FFXI, mainly) - would be a comparison of methods to connect a PS2.

Short answer: no. There is no way to improve the PS2s performance through modding. Most modchips only affect region and piracy restrictions.

Modding doesn't increase anything. It decrease the cost of the game if anything (because they are there to let you play pirated games)

oh. I don't want to do anything pirate-like (other than unlock Corsair, I suppse^^).

I do wonder about the other thing, though. I have connected the playstation a few different ways -I forget exactly how I did it b4, but I think it worked better.

If you use component video cables to hook the PS2 up to the TV, the image quality will be better. Your TV need to have component inputs of course. That's pretty much all you can do.

Sometimes, I connect the 50 inch TV that I got 'surplus' from where I used to work (you can still see the faded "INSERT CREDIT" on the screen^^). Mainly, to play four-player games (I have four children /joy ).

Anyway, gtg - catching a jet for home.. the vagaries of my employment make my job a sinecure when away from home, but overworked (not to mention, 2hr drive to work - one way, blah blah blah - hee he) when I get home, lol

So, I'll seldom post here so much as I have been since I found this place some wks ago.. so..

Yeah, there isn't much you can do to improve the PS2. If you are planning to edit things of FFXI then about the only way would be to hook the PS2 HDD to a computer and get into it's files to edit those and configure settings there. Yeah, though otherwise changing it's RAM or processor speed isn't something you can do that easy.

Yeah, as far as graphical images go. Quality of image will improve going from Y-Video, to S-Video, to Component Video. Even then the only change mostly is just how well the signal holds a color. Component Video holds a color very well since it's using 3 connections to blend colors to get a specific result, so it's able to properly give the right colors. The others use a frequency of different ranges to tell the TV all the different color ranges, but the frequencies have trouble holding certain colors like cyan so overtime cyan will end becoming more blue or more green.

That's about all you'll get for improvements with the PS2 without a lot of work and probably some major changes.

One of my friends claimed he "overclocked" his PS2 to make things run smoother... but I'm not sure...

Overcloking ~might~ be good. Could you possibly try to find out some details, HairdewX? ..does this friend play FFXI (with) that unit?
Also, I left out that the different way of connecting my PS2 (that I mentioned) was in respect to the network settings/connection. Could anyone experiment? Which port settings, and so-on? Not sure when I'd get to it, myself

You have four kids and you play FFXI? I bet you don't know what they look like anymore.

You can upgrade to an Xbox 360 to please yourself and you children. You'll have FFXI with an ever-so slight boost in graphics as well as HD capabilities, and a surplus of shooters for them to desensitize themselves with.

ah, well - do not have ~regular~ TV in our house - we mainly read ride bikes, and various other things. Actually, my job is what keeps my time away from the kids But, sometimes when I'm away (from home) FFXI is about the only thing I do (relatively cheap compared to, gambling, or drinking - hee he).

nh.. I did purchase the 360 copy of FFXI when it was onl sale at Wal-Mart even though I have yet to buy unit!

getting back on to(ward) the topic..
I wonder if anyone has observed any advantage network-speed-wise with a 360? I'd think that the PC version should be able to be the fastest (as far as the internet connection).

As of legal things you can do to a ps2 is run FFXI off an external hdd rather then the one that you can only get on ebay. Outside of that nothing of what you are looking for really. =/

FFXI doesn't use the XBL servers, so you can use the 'free' service (silver, I think) to connect.

Actually, I think it was a really narrow chance we got FFXI on 360, since MS wants to control all the online functions of games, and the servers.

I think if you want better performance that you can travel with, your best options would be a laptop, or an Xbox 360... If you do go with a 360, make sure you get an extended warranty... I haven't had any issues with mine, but some people do get problems.
