  • Tearing, flickering, blurring when turning?

I have exhausted every possible resource trying to figure this problem out. It is really starting to get to me.
    The problem:
Whenever I am walking/running in a staight line everything looks perfect. However, when I turn, whether with the character or the camera, the screen basically flickers and tears until I straighten out again. The effect looks almost like what you see when you see a CRT TV in the background of a tv show while youre watching tv ie you see the refresh rate almost. The effect is not nearly pronounced but it is really annoying nonetheless.
My girlfriend's computer does not do this and it is much slower and has integrated graphics.
I have a core 2 duo at 3.2 with 4 gigs of ddr2 at 800 mhz at 4-4-4-12 with an 8800gtx ACS3 edition and a cable modem at 8mbps/sec and the nec 20wmgx2 widescreen at 1680x1050
What is going on? Ive tried mogtoolz, ive tried using an nvidia profile to force settings, ive tried running at lowest resolution with no enhancements and everywhere in between.
A member here about year ago posted this exact issue but the responses given were the video card getting to hot so that doesnt help me : ( That is the ONLY post on this issue in this forum unfortunately, and seemingly every other forum in existence.
Can anybody help me figure this out? I want to get into this game but this is killing me. The game is definitely playable and Im not lagging, that i can tell at least, unless this is the definition of lag for FFXI. Please help! Thanks!

Was that my thread? Been about a year since then.

I've got some screenshots from the game with that funky stuff happening, so I can post those a little later (finishing prepping for some tests right now)

The problem wasn't my video card getting too hot, it was that it was crapping out. I wound up getting a new video card for my computer.

I believe it was : ) What card do you have now? I wonder if it is an 8800 series issue. I know my card isn't crapping out since I have no problems with graphically intensive games at 1680x1050 with 16x af a 16x AA : ) Please post those when you get a chance so i can confirm the same issue.

Ill edit my subject to include 8800 in case there's any others out there. All theories welcome! Ive been waiting years to play this game and im very sensitive to grphical glitches like this and i want to get the most out of the game.

Well, new graphics card is a Radeon X800 XT.

Keep in mind that my old card started out with some minor problems that appeared ONLY when playing FFXI, then got worse as time passed.

Initial problems were with bows and crystals while synthing in particular. Bows and crystals would appear stretched/super big, pics:

Me crafting with an earth crystal:

I don't seem to have a picture of a bow, but it always seems like it's rather stretched out or something.

And what my screen eventually looked like when I logged into the game:

Do you have any screenshots of these effects when they are happening?

Re: Tearing, flickering, blurring when turning?

Oh god, i havent seen anything that bad : ) I haven't been able to capture a screen shot of my affect as it is only visible when turning and moving but I will keep trying. I wonder if my issue is lag. What are good numbers to have in the upper righthand corner?

It's so frustrating since I want it to run smoothly. I don't have any slowdown or delays in actions but this flickering refesh rate-like anomoly is killing me. It's like a tearing affect but I've tried different combinations of vsync on/off, etc to no avail. Im very curious if this is an 8800 series issue so I hope someone who has one can weigh in on there experience with these cards (aside from the menu button brightness issue; thanks nvidia).

What settings do you use for your ATi card to run this game? Thanks!

I'm using Nvidia geforce Go 7600 here. I also have those crystal exploding problems but only once in a while. Not sure if it's the graphic card that cause it. It's kinda funny everytime I see them that way.

            I had had more problems with ATI >.>;

Re: Tearing, flickering, blurring when turning?

Hmm, very interesting problem. Only time I saw this happen was with my GeForce FX series. It was because the card overheated (Fan stopped working, you could see some of the transistors blown out like popcorn).

Yeah, generally for problems like that it's a pretty good chance that something is wrong with the card or the drivers. The upper right corner with the numbers don't really help much. They kind of just state the obvious, if you got numbers around 1k then that zone has somewere near 200+ people on it. If numbers are near 1.5k then close to about 400+ people. If they are near 200 then you might be pretty much alone in the zone and if not then it's an indication you have a really bad UDP packet drop rate.

Though UDP packet drops has little to do with your on screen motion. If it's doing something like what you see with CRTs through a Camera then it could be that the Hertz the video card is running the screen at is to low. Can try bumping that up.
