  • Run Speed x5 - x50

I logged in this morning to begin my daily routine of running around aimlessly when suddenly my character begins to run at about 5x the normal speed. Everything was faster. Doors opening, character animations, camera control.

I finally decided to call a GM because I didn't want to be reported as cheating or something. The GM comes and watches me and then, after stressing I wasn't in trouble, takes me to jail to help me figure out the problem. They give me some technical support numbers, etc., and I am told to run virus scan and a file check in POL. I do both and end up reinstalling FFXI. Well, my run speed is normal, as is everything else, only when I am in 3rd person. First person view causes everything to kick into turbo once again.

I don't have anything running in the background and I haven't the slightest of what is causing all of this. Before the reinstall, it seemed to deal with graphics to an extent. When I was placed in jail, where there isn't anything graphically intensive, I literally was running so fast that my LCD monitor couldn't keep up with the leg movement. Even with graphical lag, however, I still run faster.

There isn't any jerking about in the movement either. It has nothing to do with the network connection. I tried different video card drivers, still nothing.

The odd thing is nothing was wrong last night. I woke up, installed Fraps, and it went haywire. I turned Fraps off, still nothing. So I think the installation and the problem are a coincidence...
    Any ideas?

    have you been overclocking?
    are you playing on laptop?
have you done anything with the graphics card or driver?

    Thanks Yyg!

I turned off my overclocking, but it didn't do a thing.

I did a lot of driver updates, but I rolled back to the original ones.

      I'm not on a laptop.

Did you mess with your system time? I know that can suddenly make your character move at crazy speeds sometimes. I had it happen to me, but I /shutdown and rebooted when I noticed my tail moving at 100mph.

Maybe it was windows updating your time, since it's set to automatically syncronize it's time. When it happened to me, I only adjusted the time by about 10 seconds, so it doesn't have to be a large change.

The odd thing is toggling of first/third person view mode trigging the movement speed problem. I can't think of anything which may cause the problem yet hinges on that.

          This problem is exceptionally strange...

I would suggest the following tests:
          - Get a really trusted friend to log on to your character from another machine, and run around in first person mode and third person mode.
          - Log on to another account on your computer, and do the same.

Disclaimer: I am not responsible if your friend steals your stuff or if you steal your friend's stuff while in each other's account.
          Bamboo shadows sweep the stars,
          yet not a mote of dust is stirred;
Moonlight pierces the depths of the pond,
leaving no trace in the water.

I just reformatted my computer and I am going to reinstall FFXI one more time. It ran perfectly before, so if there is a problem now...

            Be back soon...

That is very odd, although the first person view typically runs smoother for me, I imagine it's just because it has less to render on my outdated video card.

Sounds like a bug in FFXI, like under such and such conditions it takes off the FPS cap.

Yes, it was something like that Feba. The FPS sored in FP-mode. Of course before I reinstalled FFXI (before the reformat) it was soring even in 3rd person.

Anyway, all fixed. Did a reformat and while I was still fast in first person when I requested to get out of jail, once ejected it went back to normal.
