I just did a topic search and I couldn't find anything too specific, so I apologize if this has been covered in detail before....
A few times this week I've woken up to a DOS screen saying "Hard Disk Boot Error". My computer is always on, it usually sits in idle overnight, although a couple days a week I have a defrag and virus scan scheduled to run overnight (the same way I have always done for years without problem). Anyways, on days when I don't wake up to that, I get the Active Desktop Recovery screen. I've talked to the Techs at my work, and they are all telling me my master Hard Drive is most likely going. No big shock there, it's 5 years old, and being that it's kinda small (120 gig) I figure this is a good time to pick up a 500+ gig SATA drive to replace it.
Anyways, I need to backup my FFXI installation. I'm not so much worried about macro palettes and chat filters (I can just rebuild them as needed), but what I AM worried about is the 4 days of updates I will have to do if I reinstall FFXI from scratch, so I'm looking for a guide to backing up and restoring my FFXI installation.
Would I be able to just copy the entire playonline folder on my hard drive to a DVD (or multiple DVD's using Nero Back It Up!), then install FFXI from the discs (I have the Vana'diel collection from last year and a seperate ToAU Expansion disc), and then copy the files from the DVD over the ones from the new installation? It seems to me like this would work, unless there's registry keys and stuff installed with the updates, in which case I'm prolly screwed on that route.
Anyways, I need some advice from someone that's done this before...if worst came to worst I suppose I could just sit through the updates, but in all honesty they suck ass and if there is anything I can do to avoid that I'm all ears. Thanks for any help! ^^
