  • Error 4001 - Help!

Hello there, I recently bought FFXI after months of drooling over it, already updated and did everything, created a character, but when I wish to start playing the game goes on a black screen with the arrow still floating, just to give the error 4001 - no response from server. I'm running it on Windows XP and no firewall... My trial period is going to waste .
    Thanks in advance,

Here's one of the 50+ threads that came up when I searched 4001 in the forums

      http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/gen...highlight=4001

If that doesn't do it, try the search and look through the results. There should be a lot of useful info in there.

Already tried that, but since I have no router 99% of those thread aren't of much use to me.

4001 means UDP ports are being blocked. Not having a router may not mean anything. It could be related to a software configuration or it could be something with the connection down the line.

How are you connected? Are you at home, work or school? Are you on a PC, 360 or PS2? Have you called POL?

Direct cable connection, at home, on Windows XP. I can't call POL because the long-distance call would destroy my wallet ;_; (I'm from South America). I've played several MMORPGs and online FPS before, with no problems. I can connect to POL and Tetra Master with no issues either.
I think I've tried it, but... How do I check the UDP port thingies? I forgot if I did it or not, with all the fuzz I've got here

              Re: Error 4001 - Help!

Its commonly referred to as port triggering/forwarding, your likely being blocked ether your routers firewall or your pc's software firewall depending on what you are useing. Basically not every port FFXI uses is open by default, some firewalls will detect pol.exe (the process name) properly and open port's accordingly and some will not.
Here is ffxionline's sticky about what ports you need open.
Here is a site with information related to router firewalls.
http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm (It's not the most user friendly site unfortunately.)
If all else fails call your ISP and see if they will help guide you though it.

                Re: Error 4001 - Help!

                Slight thread hijack.

I've been having problems with 4001 for a while, since I moved a few months back and had to switch ISP. I've disabled my router firewall, opened the appropriate ports, am not using wireless and don't have a Linksys router.

I believe in my case it's an ISP problem. I have one one those regularly-update-the-speed-of-your-connection-to-give-you-the-best-possible-service things. This means that my connection will often cut out for a short time (roughly between 1 and 15 seconds). I've checked my router stats after a 4001 d/c and seen that my entire connection has dropped, not just the one to POL.

If anyone knows a way to stop my router trying to change my connection speed, please can you let me know? I want to know if there's anything else I should be doing before I get in touch with my ISP.
I have heard that those who celebrate life
walk safely amongst the wild animals.
When they go into battle, they remain unharmed,
the animals find no place to attack them
and weapons are unable to harm them.
Why? Because they find no place for death in them.
