On the back of the box, under minimum requirements, it says
    Optical Drive=DVD-Rom Drive

How many cd's is the 2007 supposed to come with?

None, it comes on DVD. Probably only one DVD at that.

                Re: Dvd_rom

The HDD isn't supported by Sony any longer. The PS2 HDD doesn't even have anywhere to attach to the new slim PS2s (I have both versions of PS2).

Let's back up a second and talk about fees though - it wasn't clear from your earlier post, but you do realize that you have to pay a monthly fee via a credit or debit card to play FFXI right?

Well then, it sounds like you've got a bona fide DVD-Rom.

Just for grins, I did some googling for the error "a disc with unsupported format in drive" This doesn't seem to be that uncommon of a problem, and the most recommended fix seems to be be un-installing dvd en/de-coder software - e.g. PowerDVD, Nero, Roxio.

Once you've got those uninstalled, restart your computer, and see if you can install FFXI via the DVD.

If you're talking about the top level node in the Device manager, no that doesn't mean you have a DVD drive. It means you have at least one optical drive. That might be a CD-ROM, CD Writer, DVD-ROM, a DVD Writer or any combination of those.

If your talking about the Device type under the properties of a driver, that also doesn't mean you have a DVD driver. It means it's an optical drive.

I was actually responding to Spellboundwrath -- who indicated they were receiving that error when movies or the FFXI install dvd were in the drive.

                            But to answer your question:
Windows has a neat little applet in the control panel called "Add/Remove Programs"

When you open up the "Add and Remove Programs" control applet, it lists all the carp that's been registered as installed on your computer. You can highlight each entry and click a button to have it un-installed.

Because if they would have released it on cd it prolly would have been 3 or more cd's. Cd's and Dvd's cause almost the same amount of money to make, so putting it all on one dvd is much cheaper for them.

Besides, it's 2006, and your going to find less and less software coming out on cd-rom in the next year or two, so you might as well bite the bullet and buy a dvd drive. I work at CompUSA, and we have dvd burners for like $20 or less on sale most weeks, let alone dvd-rom drives that are like $30-$40 at all times. Installing an optical drive takes all of 5 minutes (there's 2 cords to connect), and there usually isn't even any software to install, unless you want the stupid trialware they come with. Most store bought computers only come with one drive (there's maybe 5 desktops we sell out of 50 that have 2 drives in them), so there's an open slot right there.

If you own a laptop, an external dvd burner can be bought for a little as $40, and they connect via USB 2.0. If you don't even have that, it's time to seriously consider an extensive upgrade, if not purchasing a new computer. We've got laptops on sale tomorrow (black friday) for like $200, and a couple desktops for $99 that may be gimped by today's standards, but would smoke what you've got right now.
