Well, I'm finally getting a credit card(If all goes well) in less than a month. I was wondering if this would work:


Since my game should be in tomorrow, I'm going to install the game, and use my dad's credit card for the 30 day trial. Once my credit card is in, I'm going to change the credit card on the account BEFORE the 30 day trial is up, so that way my dad's card won't be charged anything.

Would it work this way? Or does my dad's card need to be charged for a content ID or something?

Yes, that works.

Here's an example of how the billing works in conjunction w/ trial;

1. Suppose you sign up tomorrow, Nov 11
2. Your trial ends on Dec 10
3. Whatever the credit card on their file as of midnight of Jan 1 PST will be charged for the pro-rated portion of Dec (Dec 11 thru new year's eve), in addition to the full month's charge for Jan
4. You'll be charged for Feb on Feb 1, and so on


Make sure you change the credit card info before Jan 1, or your dad's credit card will be charged.

Yes, you'd have to go through the normal Content ID purchase process even for the trial, but it's just that you won't be charged for first 30 days of purchase. In that process, you'll need to put the credit card information which will be validated against, although it won't be charged.

Just so you know, Content ID is like a "slot" to have a game character in it. Without it there's no playing this game. And it's the Content ID that you'll be charged for, not the character itself.

I think I get what you mean. So I have to purchase a content ID, yet I won't be charged for the Content ID untill 30 days later? Therefore, I can change the Card on the account so that it does not charge my dad's card?

remember the golden rule:
billing always happens on the first of the month for service for that month.

now to apply that to your example:
you start the game tomorrow (nov 11). you purchase your content id.
since you are on 30 day trial, your fees are waived until dec 11. following so far?

good, here's now where it gets tricky. remember the golden rule? well that's gonna come knocking on your door. you are good until 12/11, but 12/12 - 12/31 you will have to pay for (if you wish to continue to play). now golden rule time. since they charge the beginning of the month for any service for the month, they are gonna charge you the fee (~$8.18) for 12/12 - 12/31 on Dec 1 -- unless you cancel your content id before 12/1.

if you cancel before 12/1, you will not be charged and you can continue playing until 12/12.

Sign up today, change the billing info before Jan 1, and your dad's card won't be charged a penny. Simple as that. Just forget about the Content ID thing for now as it seems it's only confusing you. You'll know what it is once you start playing.

Well, I hope by "tomorrow" you mean Tuesday, because Monday is an 8 hour maintenance.

Not that you can't play after that 8 hours, but I'm just saying.

What time is the maintanence? Most likely, I'll be playing late Monday or early Tuesday, meaning I'll start playing sometime around 9PM - 12AM. While the server is under maintanence, will the patch servers be down as well? I heard I'll have to do quite a bit of patching before playing, and my internet can be really slow.

If you're aiming for late Monday you should be ok. Unless you are in Europe, at which point you'll have to be aiming for really late Monday.

Maintenance is from 9:00-17:00 PST

You won't be able to patch, as you won't even be able to log into Playonline - they are replacing the servers. If you have the most uptodate collection, patching shouldn't be too bad, but you will still be looking at a fairly lengthy download.

No, you should be fine. The card will only be charged once your 30 day trial expires. At that time, you card won't be charged until the 1st of the month. Example: today is the 13 of Nov. Your 30 trial expires on the 13th of December. Now your card won't be charged until Jan. 1 and it will include January's fees plus a prorated amount for December. After this, it will be charged on the 1st of every month. FYI if you ever cancel your content ID and then reactivate it, you will be charged a full month regardless of the day you reactivate. Unfortunately I learned this the hard way, I reactivated mine on the 29th of the month and was charged for the entire month!

wrong, wrong, wrong. you are forgetting the golden rule:
they always charge on the first of the month for the current month of service.

they will not let you play Dec 14-31 without paying for it first. that means you WILL be charged on Dec 1 for 14 thru 31. you must change the account details (from your dad's card) before Dec 1.
