Re: why is "minimise" alt+tab) exist the game!!!
That is how it it supposed to work. You're not allowed to alt-tab out. SE's excuse is something about equal playing field for PC/PS2/X360. There is a workaround, it is called windower. Technically, windower is against the FFXI TOS. I've never heard of anyone being banned for using it, though.
I'd post a link, but I think it's against the rules.Haggai

Re: why is minimise (alt+tab) exit the game?!!!
From everything I have read here in recent weeks...yes. Alt-Tab was re-mapped while running Final Fantasy XI to keep people from switching tasks, firing up a third-party "cheat" program and then jumping back into the game.
Makes sense to me. That's how Memory Hacks worked in Diablo...and even Final Fantasy 7 (PC Version obviously.)Signature!

Re: why is minimise (alt+tab) exit the game?!!!
It is a 3rd party program.
Well, if SE decide they want their game to be that way, it's beyond us to question it.There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot,
but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence
transform a yellow spot into the sun.

Re: why is minimise (alt+tab) exit the game?!!!
This may be a symptom that FFXI is having trouble interfacing with your computer. Check your drivers and read up through the FAQs on PlayOnline.com. You shouldn't be allowed to Alt-Tab from the game as this is undefined behavior for the program. The following key sequences should be captured and dismissed by FFXI:
Alt-Tab
Ctrl-Esc (Windows Key)
------------ [EDIT: Ctrl+Alt+Del sequence is not blocked by FFXI]
When my game has an aneurism, it will sometimes allow me to use these key sequences when it loses control of the input HAL, but generally speaking the crash occurs before I can use these key sequences.

Re: why is minimise (alt+tab) exit the game?!!!
ALT+TAB doesn't crash ffxi, it's losing window focus. The same thing will happen from popups and such.
This is not to even the playing field or prevent hacks, it's just something sony made SE do to have it on PS2 and PC, iirc. Of course, Sony no longer supports ffxi, but SE still hasn't windowed their product, although they show no real objection to the windower program, which I would link to you, but it's not allowed on this forum.
Any hacker that needs windowed mode isn't even as good as the worst script kiddie. Anyone who says that hacks need windowed mode, or that windowed mode encourages hacking, has never actually researched the subject at all.

It doesnt need to be windowable to be hackable but it does cut down on the hackers, the dumb ones i suppose? Better to cut down on some than on none. Amirite?signatures are for pussies mew mew mew, here's mine

Even programs like FRAPs do not even require the game to be running before you actually start it.

So basically, many people have been wrong with their assumptions about why SE didn't add in Alt-Tab function. It is not to deter cheating, as you could also be doing it on the PS2 with Gameshark and other such 3rd party software/mem hacking devices already.

I'm pretty sure this behavior is implemented by the FFXI client program. If your machine behaves differently, it may be because some other program or security feature that you have activated is intercepting keyboard control first and passing it down the chain to FFXI thus allowing you to escape the program. As for popups and other programs, no pop-up programs can override FFXI on either of these boxes. This includes but is not limited to Yahoo! Messenger, Windows Update, and Firefox (download complete box).
I'm going to use my crystal ball and guess that you have some security package/option installed. These programs could interfere with other program's execution and allow you to stall or stop them when they don't want to cooperate by altering Window's message handling and acting as a "nanny" of sorts.

Nope. All that starts up with windows is an nvidia tray thingy, adobe gamma loader, and something related to microsoft office.

Re: why is minimise (alt+tab) exit the game?!!!
Hmmm... I have no clue to why the behavior would be different... I had always assumed that everyone's systems behaved like ours. Of course, I'm actually rather pleased that our systems behave in this manner as to have it behave like yours would grow rather tiresome. I have actually popped the Windows keys off my keyboard to prevent this behavior on other games...
