Any idea what's this suppose to mean....? The game ran fine before update. Running straight POL, no windower.

Maybe they finally updated the game's engine! DX9! New video cards will be used at 100%! No more laggy particle effects! More drawing distance!

Either that or there's gonna be an emergency update in the near future.

That looks suspiciously like a resizing error. Since you aren't using windower, what I'd try is checking to see that you didn't edit up your background resolutions. If you maxxed these or just hex edited them beyond what's normally supported, use the FFXI and POL config tools to take them down a few notches. The new version may have inadvertently made our old resolution modification obsolete.

I would almost bank on the fact that whatever the error is, it's caused by something you can easily fix using msconfig and changing a few resolution values. Yeah, they could've updated for DX9, but since the package only lists 8.1 sound capability as a requirement, they'd be redoing a lot of packaging to cover their butts soon.

        Just a thought...

Try running Directx config file and check for any errors in the direct x settings, I run a Geforce FX5600 graphcis card and have direct x9c installed and have no problems, if your card is capable of running DX9c downlaod and install it.
