Need a Proxy Server

Hey, I played this game last year, but now, my college's server has shut some of the ports I need to access FFXI. I can get on PlayOnline and Tetramaster, but that's it. They won't allow Port Forwarding, but I have been told that I can use a proxy server. The only problem is, I don't know where to find one. Can you give me the sites for a good proxy server (I don't mind paying small monthly fees) for FFXI? Tx, I really want to get back into playing.

A proxy server won't help you. If the ports are blocked at the college's network routers, no packets on those ports will make it to you no matter where they come from, since the data packets will die the moment they hit your college's network.

Whoever told you a proxy server will alleviate this problem lied to you.

Sorry, you misunderstood me. I want a proxy server that will converge the data on the ports I cannot access on the colelge network and send it via ports that are available. I know this is problem; if not, then every person in the IT major here is a complete idiot. Anyone know where I can find such a thing, or how I can play if I'm on a college server that blocks the necessary ports for FFXI

What you really want is a network tunnel/vpn, and yes, one could help get you around the network nazi's at your school. Chances are the best one to use would be an HTTP tunnel.

The GNU foundation has a HTTP tunnel protocol found here:

I have no idea if either product will work with FFXI.

However, since tunnels effectively put you on someone elses network, you're not going to find very many pubicly accessible ones. You'll either have to find someone outside of the school's network to host the tunnel server for you, or find someone at school who already has one up, and see if you can share that one.

gentoo is correct, tunnel is the term you are looking for. however, this won't even work for you unless you have another machine outside the college (or work) network to process your messages to POL. In other words, you need something like this:

you <--> HTTP tunnel <--> College FW <--> HTTP mediator <--> POL
