pc hangs randomly

hi all, i've recently decided to return to ffxi after a long rest. however, i've been experiencing random pc freezing, more times when i zone than walking halfway. i've tried uninstalling n reinstalling ffxi n expansions, updated my graphics card drivers, reinstalled windows xp home, it still happens. wondering if anybody could help? this never happened before when i played the last time and i think it would really start to affect my partying days in future.

Need more details about your setup:

CPU (i.e. Pentium 4 HT 2.5GHz)
Memory, amount and speed (i.e. 1GB PC3200)
Video card, make and model (i.e. ATI Radeon 9800 AGP)

Does the computer freeze during FFXI only?
Does the entire computer freeze, or just the FFXI application?
Is there any pattern to how long/what places you experience problems?
Have you defragmented and done a physical scan of your hard drive lately?

so far it only hangs in the middle of gameplay making the whole system freeze, had to manually restart.

usually it happens as i zone, but occasionally after i restart and log back in, or as i run a short distance after zoning.

i did a reg scan and found a problem saying there was an activex/com error in ffxi/rom/0 n did a repair, but it still freezed, although only after i zoned into north sandy n then to south sandy.

as i said, this problem didn't occur the last time i played ffxi around 1-2yrs back.

512MB is a bit low if you're running XP, but I'm not sure that's what's causing the problems. I'm surprised that you can't even alt-ctrl-del out (I assume this because you say you manual reset *shudderhatehavingtodothat*). I'd probably try defragmenting your HDD first... I'm sure Icemage will have some more suggestions, too.

It almost sounds like your video adapter is overheating -- but it's interesting that it seems to happen mostly when you zone; which would points to a networking issue (minus the whole system freeze).

If you have a 9600XT, you can grab a copy of ATI-Tool and see if your card is overheating. (lower models don't have a temperature sensor IIRC)
