    Sad story about that...

Lightning ran in my phone line (and the electrical line) Saturday. Bolt hit not half a foot from my house. Anyway... so the modem was of course fried. Along w/ about 2k in other equipment. Now, naturally, w/ my modem dead, I cannot test my PS2 or router to see if either was harmed. The PS2 itself would come on. The data was intact on the HDD. But I couldn't test the Ethernet port on it. Same for the router. Power light on, but who's to say it really works? So, call the Phone co, got my new modem today. Hook it up, shiny green lights. DSL still works, the phone line to my room isn't fried. Hook the modem to my PC, shiny happy Ethernet light is on. Internet works.

Hook it to my router... nothing.

Take it out try it again. Nothing.

Hook it directly to my PS2, nothing. I can't sign on to POL, it says the Ethernet isn't connected. Yet I know it's not the new modem or the cords because I'm surfing the net just fine. My brothers have a PS2/Network Adapter and were also online on SOCOM when the lightning ran in. The Ethernet light will not activate when hooked to their Ethernet Adapter either.

And I seriously doubt I have very good chances of finding one in this day and time. Which kind of sucks.

    1. I am not a fan of PC gaming. And I don't know where to find one of those newfangled adapters that let me stick my nice PS2 controller into my PC. I've spent nearly a year on XI on PS2, and adapting at this stage to PC could be horribly detrimental in party situations as I fumble for tab and Macro keys.

    2. God help me w/ the horrible long time that reinstallation and updating would take.

So, no, as with you, I don't know where to find an adapter. I've looked at Gamestop.com, but to be honest, I'd prefer not to buy online. I just am uncomfortable with it. I do it occasionally (like when ToAU was out of stock in every store for a 200 mile radius) but I'd rather find it in a store.

So, sadly, I'm facing the very real prospect of having to install XI on my PC, or go on a very long search for an adapter.

If you want to try Ebay or Amazon, they may have some new ones. It never hurts to check.

Yeah, your best bet is going to a large almost warehouse like place. Toys R Us or certain Best Buy places will have them, not very likely to get from a small store like EB Games.

Incidentally I think I have like 1 or 2 Network Adaptors that work just fine, just that the PS2s Lasers got messed up. One was a friends mistake (Idiot went and used the compressed air on the laser) and other I accidentally did (Didn't notice the security tag was on the bottom of the CD itself, what idiot places a security tag there. Needless to say when CD started spinning you heard this loud banging and then like shattering and that was it for that laser >.< ).

Radio Shack sells a quite usable PSX to USB adapter that will let you use your very-familiar Dual Shock controller on the PC version. I've used one for the past three years, and it works great. Costs about $10 US. And yes, you can walk right into a store and buy one - they're usually in stock, but you might want to call ahead and check to make sure.

Turn it on overnight and let it be.

If your PC can run FFXI, this is a more viable solution than hunting for increasingly-rare PS2 components that are no longer supported.

Or, if large stores are something you don't have access to, you should be able to find new ones on ebay. Lots of retailers/warehouses sell new stuff there.
