    Re: CPU Controller, Good? Bad?

I've been playing since early 2004 off and on. So I'm just really used to the keyboard.

I didn't see anybody specifically answering this, though I was kind of skimming. Yes, it can be a bit rough if you need to type something really quick in the middle of battle. Especially if you're playing a busy job. I haven't yet had it make the difference between the whole party dying or anything, but it is a factor.

Which is actually kind of handy for me. I'm not a terribly talkative person most of the time, and it makes for a convenient excuse. "I have to put down the controller to type, so talking to you is making me a crappy bard."

          Re: CPU Controller, Good? Bad?

How do you controller users come to terms with having to cycle through menus and macros to get to the command you want? I'm so used to just quickly firing off ALT or CTRL + whatever to get a macro off or to pull up a menu, and then I can quickly page through my items or spells or whatever to get to what I want. I feel like I can't do that as quickly with the controller, but maybe I'm wrong.

Also, is there any way to zoom in and out on the camera with the controller? I am so used to doing that with the keyboard that I feel weird not being able to easily do it when using a controller.

I've learned to anticipate what macro(s) are going to be next pretty well. Especially on Bard, but even on White Mage, there are a lot more cases of me knowing Erase is next while I'm casting Regen, and getting to the right macro, than there are cases of "Oh crap! Cure 3!". For WHM, I have four macro sets: Ctrl/L2 are all the same (cure/regen/erase/-na/etc.), while Alt/R2 are buffs, debuffs, enfeebles, and misc. There just really are not that many times where the time it takes me to get to the right macro makes enough of a difference to freak out about. I think maybe once or twice all the way up to level 40.

And no, there's no zoom. I pretty much never use zoom on purpose except for screen shots.

Controller . I still use the keyboard for typing and such, but the controller makes gaming so much easier! Lounging around on the my sofa is a lot more comfortable than sitting at a desk for 8 hours.. (sometimes). Camera scrolling and moving is a cinch!

I probably just play with the camera too much. I take a lot of screenshots while playing, and I like to get just the right angle. :/

Anyway, thanks for the tips, regardless. I'll see if maybe I can get the hang of this thing.

Also, I don't know if this is the case with everyone, but the only time I put the controller down completely is when I'm actually typing. The rest of the time I just hold it in my right hand and do all my Ctrl-M, Ctrl-J, etc. with the left. I imagine spinning the camera with the right stick and zooming with the < and > keys wouldn't be that much different once you get used to it. I mean, hell, if you've got time to line up a screen shot anyway...

I also find myself typing out a lot of spells from time to time. I type pretty fast, but not so much one handed.

And no, there's no good reason for it. I'm just weird.

Yeah, that is something I wish I were better at. With the exception of a calm, casual /ma Warp <me>, I find I usually screw it up too much to make it work very well.

I'm in the same boat. I actually use a PS2 controller when I'm leveling BST, but I can't use it at all for WHM. Any spell I don't have macroed, I type out. I can't stand the magic menu at all. :/

Yes, I know. Our resident troll, BRP, gave me that title. Unfortunately, spelling corpse correctly eluded him. LOL I'm flattered that he took the time and some of his forum gil to think of me.

I'm waiting for that ease and comfort that everyone else talks about to come to me, but mostly I just feel crippled without my key commands. It's possible that the gamepad just isn't for me.
Well I use the Logitech NetPlay controller/keyboard. Since I use this, I can use a combination of controller controls and keyboard controls quickly. All of us here prefer the NetPlay over a regular controller.
