Horrible lag issues - making game unplayable - begging for help

I did the return to Vana'Diel program after having not played for over a year or so and am having the same horrid lag which makes the game rather unplayable. it's been a nightmare to try to play like this. Constant disconnects, pings ranging from 200 to 2000... then inevitibly it begins to fluxuate between some wiered ping and 0, and then i get booted. Other times I get the Disconnection symbol by my name and I can see things going on around me still, but moments later I get booted. it sucks horribly. My internet is a 8.5 MB cable connection... it runs through a router but I have checked and rechecked.... , I have tested it with other games and they all work perfectly, there are zero problems, it HAS to be something screwed up with POL or FFXI itself..... should I completely reinsall FFXI? Update something? I have all expantions except Aht Uhrgan... does that matter? It certainly shouldn't. It's really ticking me off and making me consider quitting AGAIN (which is a shame because I just got my samurai to 70) Is there something with POL or FFXI that I have to specify that it's using a router or some crap?

If you have had this problem and/or found a solution please post here!!!!!! PLEASE HELP!

here's my system specs
AMD Athalon 64 Process 3k+, 1gb kingston ram, GForce 6600 GT video card, nVidia nForce4 motherboard, 7.0-8.5 mb connection, Linksys Router (ethernet cable, not wireless)...

i am only on amd 1800, 512k ddr ram, lousy onboard graphic card and only a 512kb boardband connection but i dont lag like you said. at most i lag is a bit of slow motion in those button i try to select or press in the game itself which i can said is largly due to my lousy graphic card as i dont have it last time when i using GF3 TI 200.

Problem you may be facing can either be from your computer system or just that your connection from your country to the ffxi server is bad.

Make sure you don't have anything running in the background, like a file sharing program or bit torrents, which are notorious for hogging bandwidth and I know for a fact FFXI does not like them either (For example, you have a PC running both apps or in this scenario, where PC A is running FFXI and PC B is running a bit torrent -- you're going to have problems) I have run WOW alongside BTs and I know even WOW has issues with it. I find it hard to believe that you can only find lag in FFXI but not in another MMO. That doesn't seem right.

You should also go and update your video card drivers. There was a slew of updates just recently which SE announced.

Also, check to make sure your network card is okay.

My router is faulty, this much I know. Every once in a while, it D/Cs one of my two FFXI accounts (While the other is still okay) You cannot say that your router cannot be the culprit in even a few instances and from what you're saying, it sounds like you're having network issues at home and/or with your ISP.

Try it for one hour without the router. Just because it works on others games doesn't mean much. Many games use different ports. Your router could be blocking some important ports for ffxi.

If that was true, then everyone would be having the same problem. However, we aren't. Thus, the problem is related to something on your end. Its an easy, convient solution for you to place blame on SE, but this most likely isn't their fault. It is either your machine, or your internet provider.

I bet it's someone on your network eating up all your upstream bandwidth with BitTorrent or something similar.
